Barnwell County and its county seat of Barnwell were named for Revolutionary War leader John Barnwell (1748-1800).
Barnwell County has decreased in size over the years as new counties were created within its boundaries (Aiken in 1871, Bamberg in 1897 and Allendale in 1919).
The South Carolina Railroad, which connected Charleston to Hamburg on the Savannah River, was built through this area, creating the towns of Blackville and Williston in the mid-nineteenth century.

Peter Causseaux was born in Barnwell County, South Carolina, and died 1830.
There is reference in that county to a court case between Ezekiel Casseau/Casso and Peter Casso/Casseau (this is an older Peter than the one in Barnwell County This older Peter Casso (earliest North Carolina records show the name as Casseau) went on to be one of the merchants of Raleigh.
Although the Dooly County marriage records have not survived, the 1850 census there shows "Annie Wade" is living in the household of Nathaniel Wade and his widowed daughter Mary Ann Brown and her two young sons.

On Monday afternoon, November 30, 1953, the Barnwell County Library was officially opened by the County Delegation and the County Library Board.
With the exception of a few months of county library service shared with Allendale County in the 1940's and a subscription library in Williston, this was the first public library since the county was founded in 1798.
In 1958, four years after its establishment, the Barnwell County Library joined Aiken and Edgefield in a three-county regional library demonstration program planned by the South Carolina State Library and funded under the Library Services Act of 1956.
