Robert Allerton Park, given to the university in 1946 by Robert Allerton (1873-1964), is open to the public from 8 A.M. to dusk.
Allerton Park is situated on land acquired during the 1800s by livestock baron Samuel Allerton (1828-1914), a founder of the Chicago Union Stockyards and the First National Bank of Chicago.
Allerton House, the private home built by Robert Allerton in 1900, is now used as a conference center.

Allerton changed hands again in 1805 when it was purchased by the 17th Baron Stourton, the premier baron in England.
The house was used by the Canadian Royal Air Force during World War II and in 1965, after the death of the 22nd Baron Stourton, the family ceased to live at Allerton.
The interior of Allerton was designed on a vast scale, with late-Gothic decoration in the style of Pugin's work on the Palace of Westminster.
