Ardrossan is indicated in a map of Scotland of the thirteenth century.
It is probable that in it was buried one of the Barons of Ardrossan.
Ardrossan Shipbuilding Co 180,000 tons of rock and cold-blast slag had been deposited onto the series of rock islands to form the foundation of the South Yard.

Two newspapers are published weekly-The Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald and The Ayrshire Weekly News, the former being the first penny paper established in the county, dowering this brilliant little town with a distinctive honour as a county instructor.
The last of the Barclays was Sir Fergus de Ardrossan, who had horses so fleet as to be like no other horses, and their unearthly speed, it was said by his baffled competitors, was owing to a bridle which he possessed that was enchanted by the devil.
From Ardrossan promontory, north-east to three-quarters of a mile from Dalry, the length of the parish is fully five and a half miles; and, across the middle, its widest part is fully three and a half miles.

The whole is well supplied with steamcranes and other appliances for loading and discharging; whilst a lighthouse with white flashing light stands at the NW point of the outer breakwater, and a beacon tower on sheltering Horse Island, a low and grassy islet of some 12 acres, lying ¾ mile to the WNW.
At first a sub-port of Irvine, Ardrossan was constituted a head port in 1858, and at the close of 1880 had on its register 108 sailing vessels of 12,553 and 11 steamers of 3547 tons, against an aggregate tonnage of 10,326 in 1860,11,396 in 1864, 12,173 in 1869, and 12,943 in 1874.
Ardrossan parish has its church at Saltcoats, a living worth £403 per annum, and a population (1871) of 3420.

Ardrossan was proud of two railway systems running to Glasgow; the Glasgow and South Western (GSW) and the Caledonian which later merged with the LMS.
The king gave the lands of Ardrossan to various English families such as the de Johns, John Balliol and Sir William Latimer; but in 1305 Hugh de Ardrossan regained the Barony of Ardrossan.
After 1484 the lands of Ardrossan passed to the Montgomeries (Eglintons) who kept the castle until (it is alleged) Cromwell's troops sacked and destroyed it during their punitive campaign 1648 - 1650 when the Eglintons took refuge in Sma' Cumbrae Castle.

 The Bunker Port
Steamers were also plying between Ardrossan, Glasgow and Ayr, and the Burns line (later to be amalgamated with another company to form BurnsLaird) had occasional sailing's from Ardrossan to Liverpool, while in 1859 a paddle steamer, the Adela made her first voyage to Belfast in a record-breaking crossing taking just a little over five hours.
Ardrossan was a very important sea port in war time, and there was also a substantial army presence in the town, yet no air raids were inflicted upon it by the enemy.
It aroused much interest and there is now a memorial stone in Ardrossan's sunken garden, and a plaque at a local church, both tributes to the men who lost their lives in the sea of fire.

A former Ardrossan minister, the Rev Rigby Murray, is the new moderator of the Presbyterian Church of England.
Mr Hugh Gillespie, chief of the G and SW Marine Department at Ardrossan was entertained in the Station Hotel to mark the occasion of his recent marriage.
Two members of Ardrossan New Parish Church choir, Miss Nisbet and Mr Malcolm Sinclair, were presented with farewell gifts by their fellow members on the occasion of their removing from the town.

Alexander, the 10th earl (17 231769), a son of the 9th earl, was one of the first of the Scottish landowners to carry out improvements on his estates.
He was shot near Ardrossan by an excise officer named Mungo Campbell on the 24th of October 1769.
As he left no male issue he was succeeded in the earidom by his kinsman Hugh Montgomerie (1739-1819), a descendant of the 6th earl, who was created a peer of the United Kingdom as Baron Ardrossan in 1806.

He probably came to Scotland with Walter Fitzalan, the first high steward of Scotland in the reign of King David I. Sir John Montgomery, the 7th Baron of Eaglesham, was a hero at the Battle of Otterburn in 1388.
The 12th Earl of Eglinton rebuilt Eglinton castle and was created a peer of the United Kingdom in 1806 as Baron Ardrossan of Ardrossan.
The 18th Earl of Eglinton also has the titles of Lord Montgomerie, Lord Seton and Tranent, Earl of Winton and Baron Ardrossan of Ardrossan as well as Hereditary Sheriff of Renfrewshire.

By charter, dated 9th March 1413, the Regent Albany confirmed the grants made by John of Montgomerie of Ardrossan, Knight, to Robert, his son, of the lordship of Giffen in Kyle Stewart, the lands of Lochhouse in Linlithgowshire, Knokintire and Knotmuline in Kyle Regis.
In 1487, which resulted in that king’s death as he fled-from the battle field of Sauchie, and the accession of his James IV, June 11,1488, with whom Lord Hugh was high favor and was created Earl of Eglinton, and granted the constabulary of Rothesby.

I was 1st.Mate from '71 to '73 on Baron Renfrew, Cape Horn, Cape Leeuwin and Cape Howe.
I sailed with SSM 20 years ago (Deck Cadet to 2nd Mate) Have many happy memories of the old times and have enjoyed reading the guest book and letters.
My first trip was on the Cape Sable and mylast trip was the Baron Kinnaird.We eventually paid off in Hong-Kong after an eventful time in Yantai,China.At present I am working for Northlink on the Aberdeen-Orkney-Shetland run.

Comments: Hello All, was R/O on Cape Nelson and Baron Inchcape 1973-1974, Inchcape was a good run, joined in AMS with new engines and round the world to Avonmouth and pay off, bit of a fall out with pers dept, so left and joined BP.
Sailed as GP steward on Cape Leeuwin,Cape Grenville and Baron Ardrossan.
Comments: I was an AB on the Baron Belhaven 04/61 to 02/62, if anyone would like a photo of this ship just call me, does anybody know what became of Cpt Duncan MacGreggor from this time.

My Uncle was in the Merchant Navy does any one remembber him Duncan Cameron Kennendy JNR (Cammie) born 27 April 1943 he later became a police officer sortly after he retired he died on 14 Sept 1998 Oban Bay Scotland drowned in a diving accident.
My father, John Brown (Tiree) was master of the Baron Belhaven 11 during the second world war.

Served as R/O on Cape Franklin and Baron Ardrossan, then spent my honeymoon on the Cape Grenville before joining the Police in 1974.
I started with SSM in March 1973 on th Temple Bar then the Cape Nelson, Cape Grafton, Cape Howe,Cape Nelson (again), Cape York,Cape Sable, Cape Rodney, Baron Wemyss and Baron Maclay.My time with the company was fantastic.
Sailed as leckie on Cape York, Cape Sable and Baron Cawdor.

First Master was Capt John Pearson and first mate Doug Innes on the Baron Pentland.Last SSM ship was the Cape Nelson in about 1969/70.Regards to anyone who can remember me.
Have great memories of those trips still keep in touch with a few, Richard (Tricky) Wiggins, John Dobson, Willie Sutherland and Heather Moffat who was married to Euan Moffat who sadly passed away in December 2001.

At 18.00 hours on 3 Jan, 1943, the unescorted Baron Dechmont (Master Donald MacCallum) was torpedoed and sunk by U-507 northwest of Cape San Roque, Brazil.
The master was taken prisoner and later lost when the U-boat was sunk ten days later.

At 16.27 hours on 6 Jan, 1942, the Baron Erskine (Master George Sharp Cumming), a straggler from convoy SC-62, was torpedoed and sunk by U-701 north of Rockall.
The master and 39 crew members were lost.
The U-boat misidentified her victim as Baron Haig, but it must have been the Baron Erskine since there is no other loss or success report from the area.
