The Literary Gothic   |   Clara Reeve
CLARA REEVE, the ingenious authoress of The Old English Baron, was the daughter of the Reverend William Reeve, M.A., Rector of Freston, and of Kerton, in Suffolk, and perpetual Curate of Saint Nicholas.
After his death, his widow resided in Colchester with three of their daughters; and it was here that Miss Clara Reeve first became an authoress, by translating from Latin Barclay's fine old romance, entitled Argenis, published in 1762, under the title of The Phoenix.
She condemns the latter for the extravagance of several of his conceptions; for the gigantic size of his sword and helmet; and for the violent fictions of a walking picture, and a ghost in a hermit's cowl.

The Norman baron, Eudo Dapifer, built Colchester Castle, 1075 - 1080, around the podium of the Roman Temple of Claudius, creating the largest Norman keep in Britain.
Colchester had been the first Roman capital of Britain, and the castle is largely built from materials salvaged from the surrounding Roman remains.
The castle was partially demolished in 1683, which has led to much speculation about its original height, with the addition of another two storeys being the most popular theory.

 Precedence
It might help to think of it this way: all of the barons and baronesses in their own right are standing in a line according to their dates of creation.
The barons are then joined by their wives, who join the line immediately behind their husbands and preceding the next baron (or baroness in her own right).
Almost all of the baronesses in their own right are near the front of the line, since their baronies are among the most ancient, but they may be preceded by barons of older dignities and their wives.

Wiz is the most prominent of our local rivals, popping up in many pubs around the town centre, notably The Globe, The Prince Regent, and the Baron of Beef, but not in any colleges, which suggests townie influence, but unfortunately we haven't yet identified Wiz in person.
Wiz has many 1500+ scores (but none over about 1650), and also many "most words" high-scores, but very few long or high-scoring words, so we deduce that Wiz is clearly a grid-clearer based on the time-honoured principles of speed-stabbing.
