But as soon as Edward V was suppressed, Lord Dudley attended a chapter of the Order of the Garter in Richard III's palace, at Westminster, in the first year of that tyrant (1483), and obtained from him a grant of eight manors "for his faithtul service in favoring his title to the crown".

John Sutton, 3rd Baron Dudley (1494-1553), commonly known as Lord Quondam, was the eldest son and heir of Sir Edward Sutton, 2nd Baron Dudley and his wife Lady Cicely (Willoughby) Sutton.
After Northumberland's execution, Dudley Castle was forfeited to the crown, and in 1555 was restored to Lord Quondam's eldest son, Edward Sutton, 4th Baron Dudley.

Ralph de Somerie, a son of Hawyse and her first husband, John de Somerie, was Baron of Dudley in right of his mother, during the reign of Richard.
This was certainly not very generous, but he went still farther; for, having despoiled his cousin of his castle and estates, he thrust the titles of Dudley and Somerie among his other Baronies, leaving his unhappy kinsman with the ridiculous title of lord "Quondam" in their stead.
At length, however, by a sudden revolution of fortune, this lord Quondam again became master of Dudley castle, and his son, Edward, obtained, out of the forfeiture of that potent duke, an ample fortune free from all encumberances, and a clear title.

Governor Dudley lived in Northampton as a young man and served under King Henry IV of France at the Seige of Amiens.
The arms on his seal are two lions passant; on either side is a smaller shield; on the dexter side is a cross patonce or flory; on the sinister side is a blue lion rampant, which shield Glover probably intended for Sutton's paternal coat, if so, the lion should be green.
Sir John de Sutton later alienated the castle and manor of Dudley to Hugh le Despencer, by deed 19 October 1325; but this grant, extorted from him by force while in prison, was cancelled in 1327 on the accession of King Edward III, and the property restored to the Sutton Dudleys
