In 1747, the Earldom of Elgin was inherited by the 9th Earl of Kincardine.
The 11th Earl of Elgin and 15th Earl of Kincardine, Lord Bruce of Kinloss, Lord Bruce of Torry, Baron Elgin, of Elgin (Sir Andrew Douglas Alexander Thomas Bruce, KT, was born 17 Feb 1924, resides at Broomhall, Dunfermline, Fife.
Elgin, Scotland, whatever the source of its name, was not the immediate origin for the name of Elgin, Illinois, which was inspired by a hymn tune.

During Elgin's régime four ministries in Canada held power, the Draper-Viger, the Baldwin-Lafontaine, the Hincks-Morin, and the MacNab-Morin administrations; and with all his relations were harmonious.

Lord Elgin and Baron Gros agreed to meet the Chinese envoys and sent diplomatic assistants Harry Parkes and Thomas Wade to present the Allied terms.
Elgin ignored the almost daily pleas from the Chinese to halt his advance, replying that because they had tried to mislead him, he would not think of signing any agreement until he reached the city of Dongzhou, just ten miles southeast of Beijing.
Elgin believed the destruction of the Summer Palace, the scene of the unspeakable tortures inflicted on Allied prisoners, would not only offer the strongest proof of England's superior strength, but would disabuse the Chinese of their belief in the emperor's universal sovereignty.
