It was first created in 1295 when Walter de Fauconberg was summoned to parliament.
After the abeyance of 1463 the "right" to barony Fauconberg which resulted in the termination of 1903 was held together with the barony Conyers; the two baronies then have followed the same way or line into the abeyance of 1948.
The fourth viscount was again created Earl Fauconberg, but that title became extinct again on the death of the fifth viscount.

The title Baron Conyers was created in the Peerage of England on 17 October 1509 for William Conyers, the son-in-law of William Neville, 1st Earl of Kent.

Ralph Neville, 4th Baron Neville of Raby, and 1st earl of Westmorland (1364-1425), eldest son of John, 3rd Baton Neville, and his wife Maud Percy (see NEVILLE, Family), was knighted by Thomas of Woodstock, afterwards duke of Gloucester, during the French expedition of 1380, and succeeded to his fathers barony in 1388.
The sons by his second marriage were Richard Neville, earl of Salisbury, William, Baron Fauconberg, George, Baron Latimer, Robert, bishop of Salisbury and then of Durham, and Edward, Baron Ahergavenny.
He was created baron of Burghersh and earl of Westmorland in 1624, and became Lord le Despenser on his mothers death in 1626.

One of the Fauconbergs founded a chantry in the old church, at the altar of St. Thomas the Martyr; and there was another chantry, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, but by whom founded is not known.

It consists of nave, chancel, rebuilt by Henry, Earl Fauconberg, in 1777, and octagonal tower, with battlements and pinnacles.
On the same side is an altar tomb beneath a beautiful Gothic canopy, to the memory of Henry Belasyse, Earl, Viscount, and Baron Fauconberg, who died in 1811, and his wife, who died in 1790.
He was twice married, his second wife being Mary Cromwell, daughter of the Protector, but dying without male issue, the title of earl ceased, and those of baron and viscount descended to the offspring of Sir Roland, his second brother.

He raised six regiments of horse and foot at his own expense, took part in the battles of Edgehill, Newbury, and Naseby, as well as the sieges of Reading and Bristol, and was subsequently made Lieutenant-General of the King's forces in the North of England and Governor of York.
He was wounded several times and in January, 1645, was raised to the peerage by the King at Oxford under the title of Baron Belasyse of Worlaby, Lincolnshire.
During the Commonwealth Lord Belasyse acted as a sort of Royalist agent in England and was in frequent communication with Charles II and his supporters in the Netherlands.

Sir William was succeeded by his son, Sir Henry, who was created a baronet by James I. His son, Sir Thomas, became Baron Fauconberg in 1627, and then Viscount Fauconberg in 1643, after faithfully supporting Charles I. He continued to support him at the seige of York and the Battle of Marston Moor.
He in turn was succeeded by his grandson, Thomas, second Earl of Fauconberg, who married as his second wife, Mary, daughter of Oliver Cromwell, but later became a privy councillor the Charles II and Ambassador the Venice.
The family continued in Yorkshire until the barony became extinct in 1815, and the Abbey and lands passed by the female line to the Wombwell family.
