Baron Ferdinand James Anselm de Rothschild (1839-1898) was a British MP and philanthropist, a member of the international Rothschild financial dynasty.
Born in Germany, he was the son of Baron Anselm Salomon von Rothschild (1803-1874) from the Austrian branch of the banking family and Charlotte Rothschild.
Baron Ferdinand's collection of Renaissance objets d'arts from the house was bequeathed to the British Museum as "The Waddesdon Bequest".

World War II Freyberg was classified as unfit for active service with the British Army in 1937.
In the chaos of the retreat from the Greek mainland campaign of 1941, Freyberg was given command of Allied forces during the Battle of Crete.

The Right Honourable Bernard Cyril Freyberg, 1st Baron Freyberg, VC, GCMG, KCB, KBE, DSO (21 March 1889–4 July 1963) was a distinguished military leader of New Zealand forces during both World War I and World War II.
Freyberg was born in Richmond upon Thames and moved to New Zealand with his parents when he was two years old.
He died at Windsor on 4 July 1963 following the rupture of one of his war wounds, and was buried in the churchyard of St Martha on the Hill in Guildford.

During the desert campaign of 1941-43 Freyberg, who was made a KBE and promoted to the rank of lieutenant general in early 1942, came into his own as a divisional commander.
In the climactic battle of El Alamein in October-November 1942, the New Zealand Division played a vital part in the Allies' final breakthrough; for his leadership of it Freyberg was immediately made a KCB.

Born at Richmond Hill, London, in 1889 and educated in New Zealand at Wellington College, Freyberg served in the New Zealand Forces from 1911-13 and then returned to England to study dentistry.
