It was created in 1962 for the prominent lawyer and Conservative politician David Maxwell Fyfe along with the subsidiary title Baron Fyfe of Dornoch, of Dornoch in the County of Sutherland.
The earldom and barony were created seven days after Maxwell Fyfe was axed from the Cabinet in July 1962 during the Night of the Long Knives.

It is a beautiful, partially coastal drive with some superb views, especially over the Beauly Firth bridge, Cromarty Firth bridge, Dornoch Firth bridge, as you pass the northern entrance on the A9 to Tain and causeway at Loch Fleet at The Mound.
Train service is presently at an average speed of 25 miles per hour and the 160-mile Inverness to Thurso/Wick route currently takes from 3.5 to 4 hours, which makes it unrealistic for commuters and others with no time to waste to use the service.
If ever implemented, the Dornoch rail link could conceivably cut the journey to 2.5 hours, but only if it cuts out the Lairg loop completely (and have this section replaced by say a steam train as other communities in the UK have done) and no longer stops at certain stations on the line.
