James, 2nd Lord Hamilton, son of the 1st lord and Princess Mary, was created earl of Arran in 1503; and his son James, who was regent of Scotland from 1542 to 1554, received in February 1549 a grant of the duchy of Chfltellerault in Poitou.
Archbishop Hamilton was hanged at Stirling in 1571 for alleged complicity in the murder of Darnley, and is said to have admitted that he was a party to the murder of Murray.
At the pacification of Perth in 1573 the Hamiltons abandoned Marys cause, and a reconciliation with the Douglases was sealed by Lord Johns marriage with Margaret, daughter of the 7th Lord Glamis, a cousin of the regent Morton.

The title Baron Hamilton, of Hambledon in the County of Leicester, was a title created in the Peerage of Great Britain in 1776.
The Duke of Hamilton died in 1758, and his Duchess remarried the following year, to John Campbell, who later became Marquess of Lorne in 1761 and 5th Duke of Argyll in 1770.

After the death of Johns brother James in I~77 the title was for a time dormant; then in 1799 the House of Lords declared that William Hamilton (1765-1814), a descendant of John Hamilton, the paternal great-grandfather of the 2nd baron, was entitled to the dignity.
William, who became the 7th baron, was succeeded by his son Robert (1793 1868), who was created a peer of the United Kingdom as Baron Hamilton of Wisliaw in 1831.
He died without issue in December 1868, when the barony of Hamilton became extinct; in 1875 the House of Lords declared that his cousin, James Hamilton (1822-1893) was rightfully Baron.

The harbour is rendered safe for vessels of 150 tons' burden by an excellent pier, completed in 1763, principally by Baron Hamilton, aided by a parliamentary grant, and is a place of refuge for vessels of that burden at 3/4 tide.

James Hamilton became 4th Duke of Hamilton, not on the death of his father in 1694, but in 1698 when his mother Anne, Duchess of Hamilton in her own right, resigned her honours in his favour.
In September 1710 he was, by this patent granted by Queen Anne, created Baron Dutton and Duke of Brandon in the Peerage of Great Britain.
No such request, however, was ever made on behalf of the Duke of Hamilton who continued to sit as a representative peer until his death in a duel with Lord Mohun in 1712.
