John Glencairn Carter Hamilton, 1st Baron Hamilton of Dalzell (1829-1900), was a Scottish soldier and politician.

James, the fourth Baron Hamilton of Dalzell, who has died aged 68, spent almost all of his infrequent appearances in the House of Lords in fighting the European Union and particularly its common agricultural policy (CAP).
When his father, the third baron, died in 1990, James had inherited a couple of thousand acres and much of the village of Betchworth in Surrey, as well as a Regency mansion.
He had previously inherited two estates of his father's cousin, and left his Surrey land to be farmed by his younger brother, Archie Hamilton, who became a Conservative MP and minister, while he cultivated his late cousin's acreage.
