 Baron Farnham - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The title of Baron Farnham, of Farnham in the County of Cavan, was created in the Peerage of Ireland in 1756 for John Maxwell, who had previously represented County Cavan in the Irish House of Commons.
His son, the 2nd Baron, was created Viscount Farnham (1760) and Earl of Farnham (1763) in the Peerage of Ireland, but these titles became extinct upon his death in 1779.
His brother and successor, the 3rd Baron, was again created Viscount Farnham (1781) and Earl of Farnham (1785) in the Peerage of Ireland, but these titles again became extinct upon the death of his son, the 2nd Earl of this creation, in 1823.

Thus a baron's wife is called "baroness", an earl's wife is called a "countess", a duke's wife a "duchess", etc. Despite being referred to as a "peeress", she does not, however, become a peer "in her own right": these are 'styles', not substantive titles.
Another form of courtesy title, in the form of an honorific prefix, is granted to younger sons, and all daughters of peers.
The rules differ for different ranks of peers: the children of a baron, for example, get the prefix "Hon.", the daughters of an earl are called "Lady", and so on.

The Farnham lineage can be traced back to Sir John Maxwell, Knight of Calderwood in Scotland, whose son the Very Reverend Robert Maxwell went to Ireland during the reign of Queen Elizabeth in order to "secure an interest in that kingdom" for James VI.
In common with other barons his recreations included shooting, hunting, golf and natural history; more unusually he was also interested in physics and astronomy, and was a member of the Royal Society.
He died in 1900 and his son Sir Arthur Kenlis Maxwell succeeded him as 11th Baron Farnham.

(The eldest sons of Barons and Viscounts do not receive such a privilege - they are styled 'The Honourable'.) If that eldest son has an eldest son, and there are additional titles available, he too may use a lesser title.

In 1760, the family was elevated to the Irish peerage, receiving the title Baron Headfort.
While the town never recovered the importance it had during previous periods, the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries are generally responsible for the built form and fabric of the present day town.
Kenlis Place is blighted to a degree by a number of derelict buildings (Plates 17 and 18) but overall has a pleasant atmosphere that is in no small measure due to the plainness and simplicity of form and colour that the buildings on the street maintain (Plate 19 - 21).
