After the total annexation (1849) of the Punjab, Lawrence and his brother Henry reorganized the province, creating a system of administration by which all government functions in each district were concentrated in the hands of a single official, the district commissioner.
The Punjab remained quiet during the Indian Mutiny (1857-58), and Lawrence directed the British troops in the recapture of Delhi.
Lawrence was a vigorous opponent of the expansionist policies that led to the Afghan Wars.

During the First Sikh War of 1845 to 1846, Lawrence organized the supplying of the British army in the Punjab and became Commissioner of the Jullundur district, serving under his brother, the Governor of the province.
In that role, Lawrence was partly responsible for preventing the spread of the Mutiny to Punjab in 1857, and negotiated a treaty with the Afghan ruler Dost Mohammed Khan, and later led the troops which recaptured Delhi from the rebellious sepoys.
He was raised to the peerage as Baron Lawrence of the Punjab on his return to England in 1869, and died ten years later.

Geoffrey Lawrence was the youngest son of Lord Trevethin, briefly Lord Chief Justice of England in 1921-22.
Lawrence was called to the Bar (Inner Temple) in 1906, and later joined the chambers of Robert Finlay.
Lawrence served in this capacity until, in 1932, he was appointed as a Judge of the King's Bench Division.

Lawrence spent his early years in Londonderry, Northern Ireland and was educated at Foyle College (now Foyle and Londonderry College), where a statue to him stands (having been, originally, erected in Lahore).
The statue, by Sir Joseph Boehme, once showed Lawrence with a pen in one hand and a sword in the other to illustrate his versatility as an administrator and a soldier but vandals have since damaged the sword.

Lawrence, named in honor of Amos A. Lawrence, was founded by agents of the Massachusetts Emigrant Aid Company in July 1854, and during the Territorial period was the political centre of the free-state cause and the principal point against which the assaults of the pro-slavery party were directed.
Lawrence was chartered as a city in 1853, and annexed a small part of Methuen in 1854 and parts of Andover and North Andover in 1879.

He had been well received at court, had been made Baron Clive of Plassey, in the peerage of Ireland, had bought estates, and had got not only himself, but his friends returned to the House of Commons after the fashion of the time.
Clive was awarded the title Baron of Plassey and bought lands in County Limerick and County Clare, Ireland.
