The second earl, Richard Wellesley, was created Baron Wellesley in the Peerage of Great Britain in 1797 and Marquess Wellesley in the Peerage of Ireland in 1799, which titles became extinct at his death.

The parish of Borris occupies a considerable division in the Barony of Maryborough East.
Skirting Maryborough towards the east, and issuing from this ridge, near Rathleague, there is a "holy well," (the local denomination of this well was 'Toberagaddy' "the well of the thief" also later known as the 'Holy well of Maryborough') which was formerly much frequented by pilgrims.
The Protectour Fort of Maryborough was of oblong quadrangular shape.

In 1828 the title of Baron Skelmersdale was bestowed on the head of the family and in I 880 that of earl of Lathom.

The Right Honourable William Wellesley-Pole, 3rd Earl of Mornington (1763–1845), known between 1821 and 1842 as The Lord Maryborough, was a British politician and an elder brother of the Duke of Wellington.
He was educated at Eton (1774–1776) before entering the Royal Navy, where he served between 1778 and 1782; aboard the frigate Incidental.
In 1821 he was elevated to the House of Lords as Baron Maryborough.
