The title Baron Oranmore and Browne, of Carrabrowne Castle in the County of the Town of Galway and of Castle Macgarrett in the County of Mayo, was created in 1836 in the Peerage of Ireland.
In 1926, the 3rd Baron was created Baron Mereworth, of Mereworth Castle in the County of Kent, in the Peerage of the United Kingdom.

She was born in 1606 and was baptised on August 3rd of that year at Mereworth in Kent, near her father's estate at Badsell, Kent.
She was buried at her mother's house at Apethorpe in Northamptonshire after her demise in 1634, shortly after the birth of a son and heir Charles, 4th Baron Gerard (1634-1667).
The latter became Gentleman of the Bedchamber to King Charles II in exile 1648/9.

The third was an Irish senator and one of the last knights of the Order of St Patrick, who was given the United Kingdom barony of Mereworth, which carried the right to sit in the Lords.
In 1930 Oranmore and Browne sold the Mereworth estate and concentrated on running Castle Mac Garrett, which had been spared from being razed during the Troubles because it was occupied by the Free State Army before being returned to the family.
After reading the Telegraph's obituary of the screenwriter Ivan Moffat last Saturday, he remarked: "Everyone seems to be dead." Lord Oranmore and Browne, who died on Thursday, is succeeded as 5th baron by his eldest son, the poet Dominick Browne, who was born in 1927.

The house was original built for Sir Humphrey Starkey, Recorder of the City of London in 1471 and later Chief Baron of the Exchequer in 1483.
The Royal Commission on Historical Monuments described Starkey Castle as a monument of national importance, and one of the few medieval manor houses to have survived more or less in its original condition.
