Baron Mayer de Rothschild (1818 - 1874) was the third son of Nathan Mayer Rothschild (1777 - 1836).
Nathan Mayer Rothschild the third brother after a spell in Lancashire settled in London and founded the London branch of the bank.
This was given to his nephew Leopold de Rothschild who enlarged the existing Ascott House to the neo-Tudor extravaganza it is today.

It even inspired the modern artist Giorgio de Chirico (1888-1978) to paint a self-portrait as Mars based on this painting….The present painting is first recorded in the Gerrit Muller sale of 1827 in Amsterdam.
The 41-by-29 1/2-inch paintings have an estimate of $1,000,000 to $1,500,000 and since putti are beloved it is probably reasonable because of their size and these are very large putti, so much so that their charm is almost elusive, though not Tiepolo's usual bravura.

Lady Sybil was the eldest daughter of the statesman Archibald, 5th Earl of Rosebery and his wife Hannah (1851-1890), the sole heiress of Baron Meyer de Rothschild.
In 1878 Rosebery had married Hannah and she had brought with her her father’s legendary collection of magnificent European pictures and furniture housed at Mentmore, his Buckinghamshire seat.

Although Paxton was not a trained architect he was a great favourite of the Rothschild family who were probably impressed by the Crystal Palace he built for the Great Exhibition of 1851 and his work at Chatsworth.
