Northington, who was a member of the group known as " the king's friends," was instrumental in procuring the dismissal of the marquess of Rockingham and the recall of Pitt to office in 1766, and he himself joined the government as lord president of the council, Lord Camden becoming chancellor.
His youngest daughter, Elizabeth, married Morton Eden, who in 1799 was created Baron Henley in the peerage of Ireland; and her grandson, the 3rd Baron Henley of this creation, was in 1885 created earl of Northington.
Lord Chancellor Northington was in his youth a man of convivial and boisterous manners, much addicted to swearing.

In 1885 the Northington title was also revived when he was created Baron Northington, of Watford in the County of Northamptonshire, in the Peerage of the United Kingdom.
The present holder of the Baronies, Oliver Michael Robert Eden, 8th Baron Henley, is a Conservative politician, and served in the Conservativeadministrations of Margaret Thatcher and John Major.
The first Baron was the fifth son of Sir Robert Eden, 3rd Baronet, of West Auckland and the younger brother of William Eden, 1st Baron Auckland.

The parish of Northington, which was incorporated for ecclesiastical purposes with the neighbouring parish of Swarraton in 1849, has an area of 2,414 acres, which are still distinct from Swarraton for civil purposes.
The priory of Christchurch had two virgates of land in Northington which had been granted to it in 1249 by Matilda Breton, sister and heir of Roger Breton, in exchange for a corrody equal to the allowance of one brother granted to her for life.
The plate of Northington and Swarraton disappeared in 1850 during a fire at the parish clerk's cottage, and the present plate is entirely modern.

Morton Frederick Eden, 1st Baron Henley GCB PC (8 July 1752–6 December 1830) was a British diplomat.
In 1799, Eden was created Baron Henley, after having being knighted in 1791 and admitted to the Privy Council in 1794.
On 7 August 1783, he had married Lady Elizabeth Henley (the youngest daughter of the 1st Earl of Northington) and they had four children.

Three different lands at Northington were distinguished in the fourteenth century; the Manors of Totford and Northington and the demesne lands of Hyde Abbey which were later called the Grange.
