I found a marriage on the IGI of an Ann Beecher(sic) and Thomas Clarke on 10th October 1763 at St. James, Westminster, and received a copy of the entry from Westminster Archives, and a witness was S. Lake(see later).
Baron Clarke appears to have been Charles Clarke, M.P. for Co. Huntingdon and then Baron of the Exchequer- a term used for a Judge of the court of the Exchequer which was the administrative body for the Royal Revenue.(see P.S. details below, Alured Clarke).
I was sickened by the state of St. James's Street as a whole, with down and outs and winos sitting on most of the doorsteps and as for the parking- cars everywhere nose to tail with tight parking regulations, even for residents.

Further to earlier reports on the government proposal to close St. Barthol- omew's Hospital (Jan 93 #5), the April issue of The Petrel Flyer (the news- letter of The Stormy Petrels of British Columbia) reprints news from London (Feb. 12): the British cabinet has given St. Bart's a reprieve.
May 93 #6 Further to the report (Apr 93 #4) about the campaign to save St. Bartholomew's Hospital, the latest news from Barbara Roden, in the May issue of The Petrel Flyer (the newsletter of The Stormy Petrels of British Columbia), is that Bart's survives only through merger with the Royal London Hospital.

I am well aware, as we are continually being told, that London is the fashion centre of the world, a magnet for tourists without parallel, and a truly delightful place to live.
In passing, I must advise my noble friend Lord Plummer that there can have been no body which was more closely watched by Government, Opposition parties and the public to ensure that its property was disposed of at the very best price possible.
I was particularly impressed by the speech of the noble Lord, Lord Plummer, who spoke from experience.

Mar 97 #4 Kiwi Carlisle notes that the St. Louis Art Museum is celebrat- ing Italian art, and that an exhibit on "In the Light of Italy: Corot and Early Plein-Air Painting" includes the "View at Tivoli" by Claude Joseph Vernet [grand-father of Sherlock Holmes' granduncle Horace Vernet]; the exhibit closes on May 18.
The continuing saga of St. Bartholomew's Hospital (the site of the historic first meeting between Holmes and Watson) has taken a welcome turn for the better: the Conservative government's campaign to close the hospital (Apr 96 #1) ended with the recent Labour election victory.
Congratulations to Christopher Plummer, who on June 1 won a Tony Award for best actor in a play, for his performance in "Barrymore" (he is one of the very few actors who have played Sherlock Holmes and an actor who has played Sherlock Holmes).

The tail-coated attendants can poker-facedly say "Yes, my Lord?" when approached by, say, Baron Rees-Mogg of Hinton Blewit in the County of Avon, or even Baron Birt of Liverpool.
But there's really no reason why the rest of us should put up with these inventions.
