  Rayleigh biography
Rayleigh's theory of scattering, published in 1871, was the first correct explanation of why the sky is blue.
Rayleigh of course was correct and succeeded, with considerable difficulty, in isolating the gas.
Rayleigh was a modest and generous man. He donated the proceeds of his Nobel Prize to the University of Cambridge to build an extension to the Cavendish laboratories.

Rayleigh, 3d Baron Biography / Biography of Rayleigh, 3d Baron Biography
The English physicist John William Strutt, 3d Baron Rayleigh (1842-1919), was one of the last of the great individual classical physicists whose interests spanned all disciplines.
John William Strutt was born in Maldon, Essex, on Nov. 12, 1842, the eldest son of the 2d Baron Rayleigh, a prosperous Essex farmer and landowner.
By his marriage to Evelyn Balfour, Rayleigh was brought close to high government circles: her uncle, the Marquis of Salisbury, was prime minister from 1885 to 1901, and her brother, Arthur Balfour, was also prime minister.

Should we believe the experts? (Part III) - Business Article
Sir Rayleigh is perhaps most known for the discovery of the inert gas argon in 1895, which earned him the 1904 Nobel Prize in physics.
In 1892, he was raised to the peerage as Baron Kelvin of Largs, which title he chose from the Kelvin River, near Glasgow.
On December 17, 1903, less than a decade after Sir Rayleigh and Lord Kelvin made their predictions about the impossibility of heavier-than-air flying, the Wright brothers made their first manned airplane flight in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, proving that both great scientists were dead wrong in their predictions of the future.

Rayleigh (of Terling Place), John William Strutt, 3rd Baron   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Rayleigh's one excursion into academic life came in the period 1879-84, when he agreed to serve as the second Cavendish professor of experimental physics at Cambridge, in succession to James Clerk Maxwell.
Rayleigh's greatest single contribution to science is generally considered to have been his discovery and isolation of argon, one of the rare gases of the atmosphere.
Precision measurements of the density of gases conducted by him in the 1880s led to the interesting discovery that the density of nitrogen obtained from the atmosphere is greater by a small though definite amount than is the density of nitrogen obtained from one of its chemical compounds, such as ammonia.

Wyatt Technology Corporation: Rayleigh Scattering - John William Strutt, Lord Rayleigh (1842-1919)
Perhaps his most significant early work was his theory explaining the blue color of the sky as the result of scattering of sunlight by small particles in the atmosphere.
The Rayleigh scattering law, which evolved from this theory, has since become classic in the study of all kinds of wave propagation.
Rayleigh discovered the inert gas argon in 1895, work which earned him a Nobel Prize in 1904.

 Lord Rayleigh - Biography
Lord Rayleigh's first researches were mainly mathematical, concerning optics and vibrating systems, but his later work ranged over almost the whole field of physics, covering sound, wave theory, colour vision, electrodynamics, electromagnetism, light scattering, flow of liquids, hydrodynamics, density of gases, viscosity, capillarity, elasticity, and photography.
Lord Rayleigh was an excellent instructor and, under his active supervision, a system of practical instruction in experimental physics was devised at Cambridge, developing from a class of five or six students to an advanced school of some seventy experimental physicists.
Lord Rayleigh, a former Chancellor of Cambridge University, was a Justice of the Peace and the recipient of honorary science and law degrees.
