  Barons North - LoveToKnow 1911
Dudley North, 3rd Baron North (1581-1666), son of Sir John North and of Dorothy, daughter and heiress of Sir Valentine Dale, was born in 1581 and succeeded his grandfather, the 2nd Baron North, at the age of nineteen.
In 1626 he attached himself to the party of Lord Saye and Sele in the Lords, who were in sympathy with the aims of the Commons; and when the civil war broke out he was on the side of the parliament.
He was an accomplished man, of studious bent, and had fourteen children, of whom the third son, Francis, became lord chancellor as Lord Guilford; the fourth was Sir Dudley North, the economist; the fifth, John (1645-1683), master of Trinity, Cambridge, and professor of Greek in the university; and the sixth, Roger, the lawyer and historian.

Although Saye resisted the levy of ship money, he accompanied Charles on his march against the Scots in 1639; but, with only one other peer, he refused to take the oath binding him to fight for the king "to the utmost of my power and hazard of my life".

The title Baron Saye and Sele was created in the Peerage of England in 1447, when letters patent granted the title to James Fiennes for his services in the Hundred Years War.
The patent confirmed that the barony created in 1447 belonged to Richard Fiennes, but on the condition that, for the purposes of precedence or seniority, it would be considered as having been created in 1603, and also provided that no future Baron Saye and Sele would assert the precedence of 1447.

William Fiennes, 1st Viscount Saye and Sele, 1582-1662
During the period of the King's Personal Rule, Saye's home at Broughton Castle near Banbury in Oxfordshire became a meeting place for dissidents — including the Earl of Warwick, Lord Brooke, John Hampden and John Pym — where opposition to the King's policies was orchestrated.
Saye consistently supported Pym's activities in the House of Commons and remained a determined opposition leader in the House of Lords.
After the Second Civil War in 1648, Saye urged the King to accept the Treaty of Newport and continued to press for a negotiated settlement until his hopes were finally dashed with Pride's Purge and the King's trial.

The baronial line of Saye became extinct with the death of John de Saye, fourth Baron Saye, in 1382 according to ancient peerage doctrine, or in 1399 when his sister Elizabeth, Baroness Say in her own right, died, according to modern peerage doctrine.

Would they want to open their Peter Jones furnished rooms to the public?" Happily this ghastly fate is unlikely to overtake Lord Saye and Sele's ancestral home, Broughton Hall, where a recent 10-year programme of renovations was generously subsidised by English Heritage.
Indeed, if the scheme is as popular as the baroness anticipates - "People are not coming here to burn their buns on beaches but they are coming here for the culture, the country houses and the countryside" - it may be necessary to extend viewing hours into the evening, possibly through the night.
Naturally, the kind of people who furnish their house from Peter Jones would not be interested in this sort of sacrifice, but for men such as the 21st Baron Saye and Sele, one senses that duty comes first.
