		Other studies (Baron and Ritov, 1992; Ritov & Baron, 1992; Spranca et al., 1991, Experiment 4) show that the bias toward omissions is not limited to cases in which harm (or risk) is the result, although the effect is greater when the decision leads to the worse of two possible outcomes (Baron and Ritov, 1992).
		Baron and Ritov (in press) found that both compensation and penalties tended to be greater when the pharmaceutical company paid the victim directly than when penalties were paid to the government and compensation was paid by the government (in the secret-settlement case described earlier).
		I have suggested (Baron, 1988) that the crucial element in understanding is keeping the justification of the formula in mind, in terms of the purpose served and the arguments for why the formula serves that purpose.

	Torphichen Preceptory
		It was around 1124 that the Order of St John had been granted the preceptory at Torphichen by Scotland's King David I. His successor, King Malcolm IV later granted the Order a house in every burgh in the kingdom.
		The suppression of the Priory of England (excluding Scotland) began in England with Henry VIII in 1540 and by 1559 was completed by Elizabeth I. The Priory of Ireland was surrendered in 1540, although it was briefly held by the titular prior Oswald Massingberg between 1554-57 before being surrendered again (to Elizabeth I).
		The church is attached to a hospice (for the terminally ill) and the renowned Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth - a relationship that dates back to thee end of the Crimean War.
