Other studies (Baron and Ritov, 1992; Ritov & Baron, 1992; Spranca et al., 1991, Experiment 4) show that the bias toward omissions is not limited to cases in which harm (or risk) is the result, although the effect is greater when the decision leads to the worse of two possible outcomes (Baron and Ritov, 1992).
Baron and Ritov (in press) found that both compensation and penalties tended to be greater when the pharmaceutical company paid the victim directly than when penalties were paid to the government and compensation was paid by the government (in the secret-settlement case described earlier).

The Old English Baron by Clara Reeve | The Literary Gothic   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Father Oswald, who had been preceptor to the young men, had a strong affection for Edmund, from a thorough knowledge of his heart; he saw through the mean artifices that were used to undermine him in his patron's favour; he watched their machinations, and strove to frustrate their designs.
Oswald said, that apartment was shut up because it was haunted; that some shocking murder had been committed there; adding many particulars concerning Lord Lovel's family, such as he could not know the truth of, and, if he had known, was imprudent to reveal.
Oswald swore secrecy till he should be permitted to disclose the mysteries of that apartment; and both of them waited, in solemn expectation, the event of the approaching night.

However this may be, St. Catherine's at this time only figured as a Chapel-of-Ease to the Abbey, which William FitzAdelm, in the name of Henry II., had erected and dedicated to St. Thomas of Canterbury in the year 1177.
Of both, the Abbot of St. Thomas was Rector, and he appointed the Vicars or Chaplains to serve the cures; so that the history and vicissitudes of the Abbey, down to the day of its suppression, become the history of the Parishes.
This accounts for the present Parish of St. James (to which, as we have seen, Kilmainham was united) extending across the River into the Phoenix Park, and right up to the Phoenix column, which formed the apex of the triangle constituting Tyrel's gift of Kilmehanock.

The Old English Baron by Clara Reeve is important today because of the way in which she treated the supernatural.

Although Father Oswald does not actually possess the solution to the mystery of the haunted apartment he plays a key role in assisting Edmund to uncover the truth.
