His opposition to the Reform Bill caused him to leave the Whigs and join the Tories, and he was elected, first for Colchester and then in 1832 for Norwich, for which he sat until the dissolution of parliament.

Details from William Carter's service record give the exact place of his death as 'In rear of small trench in rear of Coldstream Hollow,' and it seems likely that the precise nature of this location indicates that it was the scene of the mine explosion in the trench held by No. 4 Company.
Casualties for the day were heavy - 10 officers and 192 other ranks either killed, wounded or missing, including the officer named in the diary as commanding No. 4 Company, 48 year old Captain the Honourable John Campbell, eldest son of the 3rd Baron Stratheden and Campbell.
Neither he nor William have a known grave and are commemorated on Le Touret Memorial to the Missing, their bodies possibly destroyed by the explosion in their trench which took the lives of many men.
