 [No title]
THE BARON by G.H. Diggle It has always been accepted that "the greatest of them all" from 1843-1851 was Howard Staunton, and from 1851-1858 Adolf Anderssen.
For though the Baron never played in a set Match or in a Tournament, but was confined by his Ambassadorial Duties to club and fireside chess, he beat Anderssen 4-2 in serious "friendlies" in 1845/6, and Staunton (+5 -4 --3) in 1853.
Dr Divinsky says that in 1845 both der Lasa and Anderssen were 27 years of age, "in the full flower of their chess talent".

Baron Did You Mean baron?   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Baron is a specific title of nobility or a more generic feudal qualification.
The word baron comes from French baron, itself from Frankish baro meaning "freeman, warrior"; it merged with cognate Old English beorn meaning "nobleman." Ultimately it seems to mean a burden bearer.
The Scottish equivalent of the English baron is Lord of Parliament.

 Schach Nachrichten

 Shedletsky
In 1770, Baron Wolfgang von Kempelen constructed an automaton composed a manikin sitting cross-legged on a four by two by three foot wooden cabinet, sporting a handsome turban.
Von Kempelen very pointedly never claimed that the Turk was actually playing chess for itself (Standage).
Baron Tassilo Heydebrand und der Lasa’s observation that, “Chess is in its essence a game, in its form an art, and in its execution a science,” fits, quite aptly, the description of the development of computer chess.
