John Buchan, 1st Baron Tweedsmuir, GCMG, GCVO, CH, PC (26 August 1875 11 February 1940), was a Scottish novelist and politician who served as Governor General of Canada.
Tweedsmuir took his responsibilities in Canada seriously and tried to make the office of Governor General relevant to the lives of ordinary Canadians.
Tweedsmuir was aware of the suffering experienced by many Canadians due to the Depression and often wrote with compassion about their difficulties.

Tweedsmuir is bounded on the north and northwest by the Ootsa-Whitesail Lakes reservoir, on the west and southwest by the Coast Mountains, and on the east by the interior plateau.
Tweedsmuir is home to an extensive variety of wildlife; woodland caribou, mountain goats, mule deer, moose, fl bears, grizzly bears, and wolves.
North Tweedsmuir is dominated by two ecological zones, the alpine tundra and the sub-boreal spruce, while South Tweedsmuir has four; alpine tundra, Engelmann spruce/subalpine fir, sub-boreal spruce, and coastal western hemlock.

Tweedsmuir Provincial Park and Recreation Area, at over 2.2 million acres (895,000 hectares) and one of British Columbia's biggest parks, is most easily accessed from Highway 20, which bisects the southern half of the park east of Bella Coola.

John Tweedsmuir, as he is known to his comrades, was first commissioned in the Canadian Army in 1939 and he served with the Canadians for the duration of the War.

He died in Canada in 1940, and his ashes were brought home to be buried in Elsfield churchyard.
Lord Tweedsmuir's grave is at the eastern end of the churchyard, covered by a circular stone.
In 1996 the inscription round the stone was re-cut, with the aid of subscriptions from John Buchan's grandchildren and a generous gift from the John Buchan Society.
