WESTBURY, an urban district in the Westbury parliamentary division of Wiltshire, England, on the river Biss, a small tributary of the Lower Avon.
Westbury (Westberie, West bun) figures in Domesday as a manor held by the king.
A post mote was held for Westbury in 1361-1362, but the earliest mention of the town as a borough occurs in 1442-1443.

 Richard Bethell, 1st Baron Westbury - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Richard Bethell, 1st Baron Westbury (1800-1873), Lord Chancellor of Great Britain, was the son of Dr Richard Bethel, and was born at Bradford-upon-Avon, Wilts.
His principal legislative achievements were the passing of the Divorce Act 1857, and of the Land Registry Act 1862 (generally known as Lord Westbury's Act), the latter of which in practice proved a failure.
Lord Westbury died on 20 July 1873, within a day of the death of Bishop Wilberforce, his special antagonist in debate.

In 1850 he was appointed a vice-chancellor and created Baron Cranworth, and in 1852 he became lord chancellor in Aberdeens ministry.
He was not reappointed when Palmerston returned to office in 1859, but on the retirement of Lord Westbury in 1865 he accepted the great seal for a second time, and held it till the fall of the Russell administration in 1866.

(Footnote 13) The court baron, which had been held under the mayor's authority, was summoned in the name of the lord of the manor in 1736.
By 1433 courts baron were held on Mondays, at irregular intervals: in that year there were eight such courts, at one of which the view of frankpledge was also taken.
A local board of health for Newnham was formed in 1863, (Footnote 62) and in consequence the parish became an urban district under the Act of 1894.

It is probable that Westbury White Horse is Wiltshire's most famous chalk carving and it is the county's oldest white horse.
It was cut by George Gee in 1778 on the site of a much earlier horse which was said to be based on King Alfred's own horse on which he led the victory over the Danes in 878.

It seems that BJ compiled a selection of verses from the Bible which Farmer set to music as a Requiem (see reference to the Palmer in the Appendix), but the present whereabouts of the score is unknown.
It is not clear how he and BJ met (although their common interest in India provides a likely explanation), but the several references to him in the Jowett Papers show that they knew each other reasonably well.
