Baron Strange -- Facts, Info, and Encyclopedia article   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
His brother William inherited his earldom, which could only pass to heirs-male, but his baronial titles - Baron Strange, Baron Mohun of Dunster and Baron Stanley - which could pass to females as well as males, fell into (Temporary cessation or suspension) abeyance between the late Earl's three daughters and their heirs.
In 1628, the sixth earl's eldest son James was summoned to the House of Lords as Baron Strange by a writ of acceleration.
Later, when it was discovered that the sixth earl's assumption of the title was erroneous, it was deemed that there were two baronies of Strange, one created in 1299 and then in abeyance, and another created accidentally in 1628.

It is understandable that this hill, with its spring of water on the edge of Windsor Forest, might draw a man wishing to retreat from the world.
On John's accession to the throne in 1199 William, who was a leader among those urging that he should be crowned, became John's close companion in Britain and Normandy; John made him various territorial grants and it was the non-payment of dues on these lands which was the ostensible reason for William's later downfall.
John returned Maud and her son to England and they were eventually imprisoned in Windsor Castle where, it was commonly believed, they were starved to death in 1210.

Windsor Castle, a great gray pile overlooking the Thames, had just been built amid the forests of Berkshire, and Walter was appointed its first castellan, as well as warden of the forests.
Windsor Castle continued as a baronage for Otho's descendants for centuries, until it passed out of existence due to lack of male heirs in the direct line.
Since the Gherardini family can be traced as the founders of the House of Hanover, it was very convenient that Gerald de Windsor, baron of England, was related both to the English royal family and the Florentine Gheradinis, and hence the House of Hanover (see above).

Peter Cushing's portrayal of the Baron here is all insanity and hatred, rather than the misunderstood (if unethical) genius of previous entries.
The Baron appears to be the monster and the creature is just an unhappy victim, which is apparent in the opening scene where the Baron is wearing a hideous mask.
Instead of the misguided adventurer depicted in previous films, screenwriter Bert Batt emphasizes the Baron's ruthless pursuit of knowledge and power, culminating in an unexpected sequence in which Cushing's domination of Carlson segues from mere tyranny to rape, a scene which Cushing reportedly found distasteful.
