Baroness Hogg, the deputy in question, is used to being a pioneer.
She is married to Tory MP Douglas Hogg; daughter of Lord Boyd-Carpenter, chief secretary to the Treasury under Harold Macmillan and Sir Alec Douglas-Home; and her father-in-law is Lord Hailsham, the former Lord Chancellor.
Hogg may have a high profile as a boardroom pioneer but that is nothing compared with the publicity she earned from the Downing Street job.

After the recent Hutton Report there has been much made in the capitalist media about the impartiality of the BBC and its Board of Governors but one look at whose who on that board and how they got there will show that claims of independence or neutrality are a sham.

Lord Ryder was Political Secretary to Margaret Thatcher between 1975 and 1981, was elected a Tory MP for mid-Norfolk in 1983 and served as Tory Chief Whip in parliament.

Headhunters are believed to have approached Baroness Sarah Hogg and retiring MP Archie Norman for the job, regarded as one of the toughest in British business.
Hogg is chairman of FTSE 100-listed venture capital firm 3i, and was head of the policy unit at 10 Downing Street when John Major was Prime Minister.

Businesses will move away from using 'one stop shop' firms like the Big Five and begin using 'niche players' for their consultancy needs, according to Baroness Hogg, chairman of 3I, one of the biggest and most influential venture capital companies in the UK.
Baroness Hogg, speaking in the wake of accounting scandals such as Enron, and the current WorldCom debacle, said businesses were seeking 'independent' consultants and predicted companies would move away from professional service firms attempting to be all things to all clients.

Douglas Hogg, the Agriculture Minister, announced the move yesterday as he sought the lifting of the EU ban on the export of the beef by-products tallow, gelatine and semen.

BBC governor Baroness Hogg warned that putting the NAO in place of independent external auditors 'would create a line of accountability from the director general of the BBC to the permanent secretary of the Department of Culture, Media and Sport'.

A third of women directors have titles (Baroness, Dame, Prof, Dr) compared to a fifth of male directors, suggesting that 'branding' was more important for female than male directors, the research said.
