Modern cellos have a retractable metal spike at the bottom to support the instrument (and transmit some of the sound through the floor), while Baroque cellos are held only by the knees of the person playing them.
Modern strings normally have a metal core; Baroque strings were made of cat-gut (the G and C strings were sometimes wound with metal).
The cello is much larger than a violin, and unlike that instrument, it is played in an upright position between the legs of the seated musician, resting on a metal spike, called the endpin.

Guitar solo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Unaccompanied guitar music is found in folk and classical music dating as far back as the instrument has existed, and the use of a guitar as a solo voice within an ensemble dates back at least to the Baroque concerto.
The use of the guitar solo in heavy metal music was especially notable during the 1980s, where a solo was a common feature for a guitar-based band and a lead guitarist who was highly-regarded might be as well-known as the singer.
Generally speaking, the guitar solo constitutes the only significant instrumental (that is, non-vocal) section of a mainstream rock song, although such songs often also have tutti sections in which the whole band plays one or more motifs known as riffs.

Shred guitar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Beginning in the 1980s, shred guitar appeared in a heavy metal sub-genre known as "neo-classical heavy-metal," since it often involved classical phrases and techniques from Baroque music.
Shredding on upright bass and bass guitar is much more rarely seen due to the mainly supporting role of bass and the difficulty of the techniques involved.
Shred Guitar refers to a heavy metal guitar playing style where technical proficiency and playing speed are the major goals, often in a neoclassical framework.

Violin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The first great jazz violinist was Joe Venuti who is best known for his work with guitarist Eddie Lang during the 1920s.
The violin is used as a solo instrument in jazz, though it is a relative rarity in this genre; compared to other instruments, like saxophone, trumpet, piano and guitar, the violin appears fairly infrequently.
This can be an obstacle to a classically-trained violinist wishing to play in a style that uses little or no vibrato at all, such as baroque music played in period style and many traditional fiddling styles.

 Guitar Downunder - Baroque Suite
The Dance Suite along with the Fugue and the variation form, were the most important forms of instrumental composition in use during the baroque period.
The development of the dance suite was shared by all the countries of Europe, in fact it could be described as a 'fruit salad' creation, therefore it existed under the guise of numerous titles depending on the country of origin.
The Dance Suite may be defined as a cycle of dance pieces in various meter and tempo, written in binary form, all sharing a common key throughout.

 THE GUITAR PRE-1650
PARLOR GUITARS are very similar to Baroque guitars, with the exceptions that their tuners are usually mechanical, after about 1820, and the lower bout of the body is a bit larger than the upper bout.
Archtop guitars use steel strings, have a soundboard that is carved and arched like a violin, and, much like a violin, usually have soundholes in the shape of an "f" on either side of the bridge.
The FOUR-COURSE GUITAR had four courses of gut strings, or sometimes single strings, a guitar-shaped body with a flat soundboard, a lute style bridge, and the back tended to be slightly rounded with a distinct ridge up the center, rather like the hull of a boat.

An interesting characteristic of Baroque guitar tablature, particularly in the music of Gaspar Sanz, is the use of the alfabeto (or abecedario) chord system, which was a type of shorthand notation used with the rasqueado style of playing.
The vihuela was an instrument of six double strings, or courses, and had intervalic tuning identical to that of the modern guitar with the exception of the third course, which was tuned to F sharp.
Sanz returned to Spain and was appointed instructor of guitar to Don Juan, the natural son of King Philip IV and Maria Calderon, a noted actress of the day.

The Brazilian 7-string guitar is an acoustic guitar used primarily in choro and samba.
