  Hypertension-Treatment by Lifestyle Change-DASH-PREMIER
The details of this "barostat" are not known.
In "primitive" societies average blood pressure is very low but in "developed" societies high blood pressure occurs in up to 30% of adults and increasingly in children.
In spite of the profound effect of lifestyle change on blood pressure all trials of hypertension drugs have not used lifestyle change as the first line of treatment, a clearly unethical approach.

Therapy for functional dyspepsia - Patent 6986882
Using barostat techniques and ultrasonography it has been shown that the reservoir function of the proximal stomach is abnormal in a significant proportion of FD patients.
At the beginning of the ramp period when the barostat starts increasing the pressure in the stomach the velocity of the infused pump is dependent on, among other things, the elasticity of the stomach.
The barostat, then, in order to be able to increase the pressure linearly as preset, will increase the velocity of the influent air into the stomach as can be seen in the change in the velocity (slope) of the second part of the volume curve.

Due to differential pressure, the q-actuated selector allows activation of a 1-second TDI to the barostat lock initiator and blocks propagation to the rocket motor upper nozzle when aircraft speed is less than 300 knots.
The post ejection system consists of the barostat lock initiator, the recovery parachute catapult, the recovery parachute, a 3.0-second TDI, a 7.0-second TDI, the impact attenuation bag, the UHF antenna, the recovery parachute repositioning release retractor, and the stabilization/brake parachute cutters.
The barostat lock initiator is located on the explosive component support bracket in the rocket motor compartment.

Upon activation of the barostat lock initiator, the aneroid bellows are released to begin functioning, and the firing pins are released to bellows control.
The firing pins are retained by the bellows until the crew module falls to between 14,000 and 16,000 feet.
When the barostat lock initiator firing pins are released, detonation propagation is continued to the recovery parachute cover FLSC and the recovery parachute catapult.

Antral distension at 300 ml evoked a marked decrease in the volume of the colonic barostat bag, indicating an increase in colonic motor activity.
There were no differences between the colonic barostat bag volumes following administration of famotidine and placebo at the three distending volumes, but the increases in colonic motor activity in response to antral distension at 200 and 300 ml were significantly higher after nizatidine administration.
B, inflation of the stimulus balloon produced a biphasic response in the distal recording barostat bag: an initial relaxation (i.e., an increase in bag volume) followed by a descending contraction (i.e., a decrease in bag volume).

The barostat consisted of an intragastric air-filled bag, the pressure in the bag being kept constant electronically.
Gastric tone could be monitored from the barostat as variations in intrabag volume.

In the MA-6 and prior missions, the barostats were armed when above the atmosphere during exit flight and thus were in readiness to initiate the parachute-deployment mechanisms when the barostats sensed the appropriate pressure during spacecraft descent through the atmosphere.
While such barostat malfunctions had not been detected in previous flights or during ground tests, it was believed that an additional safety margin would be desirable because of the unexplained early deployment of the drogue parachute during the MA-6 mission.
The control barostat did not alter the circuitry that was available to the pilot for manual deployment of the parachutes.

The principle of the barostat, which consists of a pressure transducer connected by an electronical relay to an air pump, is to maintain constant pressure within an intraluminal bag or balloon by injecting or withdrawing the air through a double-lumen catheter.
Recently, Gregersen (38) emphasized that true changes in tone in tubular organs must be evaluated in terms of changes in length of the circumference or cross-sectional area, and that tone in spherical organs must be evaluated in terms of changes in the surface area.
The barostat can also record somatovisceral reflexes, such as the gastric relaxation induced by the cold pressure test, that is, hand immersion into iced water (41).

Postprandially, the barostat bag causes dilatation of the antrum due to meal displacement without influencing early gastric emptying.
This antral dilatation is likely to induce exaggerated proximal gastric relaxation observed in studies using the barostat to evaluate fundic accommodation.

STUDY OF VISCERAL SENSITIVITY MEASURED BY RECTAL BAROSTAT IN PEDIATRIC PATIENTS SUFFERING FROM FUNCTIONAL ABDOMINAL PAIN   (Site not responding. Last check: )
BACKGROUND: Decreased threshold of visceral sensitivity measured by a rectal barostat is used as a marker of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in adults.
AIMS: Our purpose is to 1) evaluate the feasibility of rectal barostat in pediatric patients, 2) measure the threshold of rectal visceral sensitivity in children with functional abdominal pain (FAP), 3) determine if the representation of the pain described during the barostat study is similar to the pain reported at home.
Children were also asked to draw on a standardized human body diagram (the degree of the pain being represented by three colors) their pain experienced at home and during the procedure.

The fasting period was examined, as well as the administration of a 10 percent intraduodenal lipid infusion (infusion rate 1 ml/min), and pain sensation thresholds were studied along with proximal gastric compliance (elasticity) by ramp distension at 2 mmHg increments up to a bag volume of 1000 ml.
