Granted, it is a top location and you can usually catch barra most of the time, but like any fishing destination, you need to plan ahead and take into account there will be times when the fishing's off.
Tourist buses flashed by us with their air-conditioned comfort as we turned off; they were headed for exotic destinations like Jim Jim, experiencing the Top End their way.
Barra, mangrove jack and mud crabs are consistent along this stretch, but remember, this is a National Park and crab pots, dillies, cast nets, etc, are banned.

After the 1829 Inspection Voyage to the West Coast, the Engineer, Robert Stevenson, recommended to the Board that a Lighthouse be erected on Barra Head.
The site was chosen for several reasons; because Barra Head is roughly half-way between Eilean Glas and Rinns of Islay Lighthouse and it stands at the Southern entrance to the Minch.
Barra Head Lighthouse was converted to automatic operation, and the last of the lightkeepers were withdrawn on 23 October 1980.

The first time we sailed south of Barra, we landed on Mingulay and did the round of hills on the island.
Berneray was a fine sight to the south, and an obvious target for a pair of island baggers and nascent ‘relative’ tickers.
Wind and water were not favourable for a landing that year, although it was temptingly close, and we headed to Pabbay for the night, with thoughts of maybe an early morning trip ashore.

Coming from West, we first had to round Barra Head on Beneray Island (the southernmost island of the Outer Hebrides Group), with its conspicuous lighthouse on top.
The Outer Hebrides are a chain of islands and islets, North of Beneray comes Mingulay, then Barra, South Uist, Benbecula, North Uist, and finally the far largest one, Isle of Lewis.

The 2nd leg from Cork to Barra was initially a beat, but then the wind dropped just as Netergy.Com Challenge came across Mizzen Head in the mist.
Fortunately the wind filled in and Netergy headed around the bottom of Ireland turning northwards on a reach up the west coast.

Stevenson's work on the Bell Rock and elsewhere provided a fund of anecdotes of the danger in which he placed himself.
Returning from the Orkneys in 1794 on the sloop Elizabeth of Stromness, he had the good fortune to be rowed ashore when the Elizabeth became becalmed off Kinnaird Head; the ship was later driven back by a gale to Orkney, and there foundered losing all hands.
Stevenson served for nearly fifty years as engineer to the lighthouse board, until 1843, during which time he designed and oversaw the construction and later improvement of numerous lighthouses.

In june 1993 we went up the hill called Heaval, with 383 meters the highest point of the island.
