  SVPCA 2000 - Field Trip - Dean William Buckland (b. 1784, d. 1856)
Attempts to use the microscopic remains of fossil pollen and spores have proved partially successful, and some approximate dates have been determined suggesting that the exposed Wessex Formation is entirely Barremian (Hughes and McDougall 1990).
As none of the Wealden Group is considered to be older than Barremian, an approximate maximum age for the Isle of Wight dinosaur assemblage is approximateley 130 million years b.p.
On the Isle of Wight only the upper part of the Hauterivian is seen, where, at Hanover Point the so-called Pine raft, an accumulation of fossil tree trunks in a sandstone channel is placed at the Hauterivian-Barremian boundary by Hughes and McDougall (1990).

Palaeos Mesozoic: Cretaceous: Early Cretaceous I --The Neocomian Epoch
Finally, the region experienced three periods of rapid sea level increase: (1) early Valanginian to early Hauterivian (this episode may have occurred in two stages), (2) middle Hauterivian, and (3) late Hauterivian to early Barremian.
During these periods, the carbonate slopes on which coral reefs had developed "drowned." That is, the sea rose and the platforms came to be submerged below the zone optimal for photosynthesis.
As we might expect, complex, intermediate patterns are observed in France, Jamaica, and Venezuela where rudists established themselves in the Hauterivian or Barremian.

The Upper Barremian is there characterized by the Urgonian facies: reefal limestones, with rich tethyan ammonite assemblages and common occurrence of benthonic foraminifera of the miliolid group.

 Jeanne d'Arc basin: Hibernia structure
During the Barremian, the entire sediment carapace above the Argo salt was displaced to the northeast along a "supra crustal" detachment in response to differential subsidence in the Jeanne d'Arc Basin.
The previously interpreted Aptian break-up unconformity is therefore a rift-onset unconformity documenting this late Barremian phase of extension.
Sediment overlying the late Barremian unconformity does not onlap the Hibernia structural high implying that the uplift of the Hibernia structure must have occurred after deposition of these sediments.

DinoWight - The Palaeoecology of the Dinosaurs of the Isle of Wight
During the Barremian age of the Early Cretaceous, the Isle of Wight was very different to the way it is now.
Iguanodon and Mantellisaurus would have fed on the leaves of trees, while Hypsilophodon and Valdosaurus would have been restricted to browsing on ferns and cycads, although there is the possibility that they may have eaten plant debris pulled down by Iguanodon.
The ornithopods were clearly the dominant aspect of the ecology of the Isle of Wight during the Barremian, evidence including the large number of Iguanodon tracks at Hanover Point and the 100 Hypsilophodon already extracted from the Hypsilophodon beds near the upper boundary of the Wessex Formation.

 SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS
This age range includes the estimated Barremian (130 Ma) time of first seafloor spreading at this latitude (Whitmarsh et al., 1990).
As the sequence youngs upward systematically, rather than showing a disordered age pattern, it is probable that several debris flows were emplaced during the Early Cretaceous, not in post-late Aptian time, and so are related to the last stages of rifting and the earliest seafloor spreading.
The peridotite must have been exposed at the seafloor during the late Hauterivian(?), early Barremian to late Aptian time, perhaps along a fault scarp, to have contributed clasts to the flows.

the description of an uppermost Barremian fossil-rich (Pseudocrioceras) level, presumably equivalent to the Pseudocrioceras coquandi Zone of Busnardo (1984), which allowed us to establish a formal Pseudocrioceras waageni Subzone in the upper portion of the Martelites sarasini Zone (Ropolo et alii, 1999, 2000a, 2000b, 2000c; Cecca et alii, 1999, 2000).
Because the stratigraphic range of this genus remains uncertain, it cannot be used as a zonal index in SE France.
We conclude that at Cassis-La Bédoule as well as in the Caucasus (Georgia) (Kakabadze & Kotetishvili, 1995), Czech Republic (Vašiček & Summesberger, 2004), Bulgaria, Colombia (Hoedemaeker, 2004; Kakabadze, 2004), etc., the concept of an uppermost Barremian waagenoides Zone as proposed by Hoedemaeker & Rawson (2000) may be retained.

The fossil record in the Cedar Mountain Formation of Utah indicates that a Barremian iguanodont‑polacanthid fauna with European affinities predating common flowering plants was replaced by an Aptian‑middle Albian Tenontosaurus‑Pleurocoelus fauna, perhaps representing an impoverished recovery fauna following a Early Cretaceous extinction event (endemic to North America).

The Barremian to Aptian sequence is characterized by highly variable, often high, organic carbon concentrations which reach maximum values in the laminated paper shale ("Blätterton") units and in the Fish Shale ("Fischschiefer"; up to 7% C
This model is based on downwelling of oxygen-rich, saline waters of Tethyan origin, which reduces the nutrient content of surface waters and thus primary bioproductivity while degradation of primary organic matter in the water column is enhanced at the same time.
Cool, arid climates are thought to typify the late Kimmeridgian to late Ryazanian and Barremian to early Aptian, separated by generally warm and wet periods.

During the Barremian, while continental breakup started in Pelotas and Walvis basins with the emplacement of a subaerial mid-oceanic ridge, the second phase of rifting (Syn-Rift II or Pre-Salt Wedge) dominated the northern basins of the South Atlantic.

Walker and Walker (1984: p.516) concluded from their study of Early Cretaceous pollen that the earliest stage (Stage I) of angiosperm evolution has yet to be recognized.
Consequently, it is difficult, to know whether the apparent scarcity of angiosperm remains below the Barremian is due to evolution, preservation, sampling error, recognition, limited exposure of Neocomian strata, or some combination of these factors.
