Barretina - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A barretina is a traditional Catalan hat that was frequently worn by men, especially in the countryside, until the 19th century.
It is a hat in the form of a bag, made of wool, usually red, or sometimes purple.
Today, use of the barretina is uncommon in everyday life, but is still used in folklore dances, or as a symbol of catalan identity.

The use of the Barretina had been a characteristic between the Catalonian sailors and army although having less tradition upon the latest.
Cortes’s description is very interesting because apart from giving them some barretina hats makes clear that he gave them “zaraveles” which is the translation to Spanish of the Catalonian “saravells” which are a wide trousers used by a lot of south Catalonians and the Valencian country also from the kingdom of Aragon.
What is now clear is that this hat was a barretina hat and the fact that the medal was a Saint George in horse killing a dragon is a clear sign for Saint George is the patron saint of Catalonia and Aragon.

The "cagatió" is a Catalan tradition, and the face wears the typical catalan hat on his head the "barretina".
Everyday we leave him food, then on the 25th december we hit him with a stick and then he gives everyone presents that he has made with the food we gave him.
After eating we do something called "caga tió", which consists of hitting a log - which has a face painted on the end and is wearing a "barretina" (which is a typical Catalan hat) – and singing a song.

The exact origin of the Caganer is lost, but the tradition has existed since the 18th century.
Originally, the Caganer was portrayed as an eastern peasant wearing a traditional hat called a barretina — a red stocking hat with a fl band.
The Catalans have modified this tradition somewhat since the 1940s.
