Barrett (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Barrett was the second and final studio album of new material released by former Pink Floyd member Syd Barrett.
Barrett was released in November 1970 to less interest than had greeted The Madcap Laughs earlier in the year, and as a result, failed to chart.
Bored and directionless, Barrett promptly headed back to his hometown of Cambridge and — but for a brief dalliance with a band called Stars in 1972, and some abortive recording sessions in 1974 — left his music career behind for good.

 Barrett Martin Bio
Barrett had already ventured into new musical realms during the course of his tenure in the Trees, and he made numerous other albums; including the 1994 cult-classic "Above" from the super group Mad Season, featuring the late Layne Staley and Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready.
One of the bigger albums that Barrett worked on was with REM on their album "UP”, in which Barrett played drums, vibraphone, and a slew of exotic percussion.
During this trip, Barrett was befriended by a Santeria drum priest and taught several of the sacred Bata rhythms of the African Orisas.

Barrett was born in Cambridge, England, to a well off middle class family, the youngest of 5 siblings.
Barrett wrote most of the Floyd's early material, and was the principal visionary/author of their critically acclaimed 1967 debut album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn.
Barrett supposedly spent some time outside the recording studio, waiting to be invited in (he also showed up to a few gigs and glared at Gilmour), it's possible that his contributions to the album (guitar on some of the tracks) were included as a concession to him.

 Syd Barrett
Of the 11 songs on Piper, Barrett wrote eight and co-wrote another two.[1] He was also an innovative guitarist, exploring the musical and sonic possibilities of dissonance, distortion, feedback, and the echo machine; his experimentation was partly inspired by free improvisation guitarist Keith Rowe.
Barrett was a remarkable guitarist for his free-form style in playing chords (and also for the use of echo, tapes and other effects): his rhythm guitar, as well as his often minimalist and dissonant solos, are seen even today as a major influence on punk, post-punk, and similar scenes.
Barrett's decline had a profound effect on Roger Waters' song-writing, and the theme of mental illness would permeate Pink Floyd's later albums, particularly 1973's Dark Side of the Moon and 1979's The Wall.

Roger Keith Barrett was born in the university town of Cambridge at the start of 1946, the fifth and youngest child of pathologist Arthur Barrett and his wife Winifred.
Recordings for a solo album were undertaken at Abbey Road in May of 1968 at the urging of manager Peter Jenner, with Jenner himself acting as producer; the sessions were abandoned after a second attempt in June, however, and the album remained in limbo for nearly a year.
Work on Barrett's second solo effort was initiated at the end of February, a few days after recording a Top Gear radio session showcasing some of his new material; this time Gilmour and Wright assumed production duties, as well as serving as his backing band along with Humble Pie drummer Jerry Shirley.

 Barrett by Syd Barrett CD
While BARRETT is not a tremendous departure from what Barrett had been working on earlier, it seems to have benefited from Rick Wright taking Roger Waters's place alongside David Gilmour in the producer's chair.
But just when you think you've heard it all, Barrett surprises with the beautiful (and almost conventional) "Gigolo Aunt." The importance of the contributions that Syd Barrett--a man simultaneously years ahead and years behind the times--made to music are undeniable.
Before the genius known forever as Roger Keith (Syd) Barrett withdrew from the public gaze forever, we were left with one more piece of recorded excellence to treasure and reflect on what might have been.

 Opel - Syd Barrett album
OPEL is a collection of previously un-released Barrett recordings. Most of the songs were recorded during sessions for 'The Madcap Laughs' and 'Barrett'.
Barrett wrote, sang and played guitar on almost everything recorded during those first outings - 'Arnold Layne', 'See Emily Play' and 'The Piper at the Gates of Dawn' l.p., but the commercial failure of his dazzling 'Apples and Oranges', coupled with an increasing unpredictability, undermined his eminant position.
'Barrett' was released in November 1970, and is, to date, the last album of new Syd material.

Syd Barrett, the psychedelic pioneer who was Pink Floyd's original frontman but spent the final 35 years of his life in near-total seclusion, has died, according to a spokesperson for the band.
Barrett (real name: Roger Keith Barrett) co-founded Floyd with bassist Roger Waters in 1965, and, like many British groups of the era, the band was initially inspired by American blues and R&B artists.
But it was during a subsequent U.S. tour in support of the album that Barrett began to show signs of instability, oftentimes standing motionless onstage or noodling away at material that had little, if anything, to do with the music the band was playing at the time.

As the founder of Pink Floyd, Barrett ingested enough LSD to drive a medium sized country mad, and by 1968 and 1969 (when this album was recorded) his mental state was very schizophrenic.
Barrett's performances soon proved to be erratic and strange, and it was soon apparent that the music was not going to set the teen scene on fire.
Barrett never played a song the same way twice; that was likely part of his madness.

Barrett fronted the band on such early singles as "Arnold Layne" and "See Emily Play" (a few notes of which can be faintly heard on Richard Wright's keyboard at the close of the Wish You Were Here album), and on the Piper at the Gates of Dawn album, Pink Floyd's first.
Ironically, the song Pink Floyd would play for an eyebrow-less Barrett was Shine on You Crazy Diamond: "Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun/Shine on you crazy diamond/Now there's a look in your eyes, like fl holes in the sky/Shine on you crazy diamond." It's about Syd.

Originally self-released on their own Extracked label (after the duo was dropped by Track itself), John Otway and Wild Willy Barrett's 1976 debut album represents the purest of the pair's recordings, a selection of songs that represented every facet of their partnership, as opposed to the madcap antics that became their public persona.
The showstopping "Cheryl's Going Home," Otway's idiosyncratic butchering of a song he found on a Bob Lind B-side, is a master class in special effects, while the closing ballads, "Trying Times" and "Geneve," have a spectral beauty that wraps around Otway's voice like a glove.
The decades since John Otway & Wild Willy Barrett have seen both players keep up a steady barrage of new releases, individually and collectively, and all have their moments of sublime glory.

The Madcap Laughs was Syd Barrett's first solo album after being replaced by David Gilmour in Pink Floyd for his erratic behavior.
One of the features of the album was that Syd's songs were often recorded beforehand with him and his acoustic guitar, with Barrett completely skipping and adding beats at will (much to the frustration of the session musicians who had to follow the unpredictable recordings).
Most of the songs on the album are held in high regard, with the exception of "Feel", "She Took a Long Cold Look", and "If It's In You"; all of which are disjointed and sung in a near-scream from Barrett.
