SoldierTech: The Barrett XM-109 Sniper Rifle   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Barrett is currently developing mounts to enable the XM-109 to be used in vehicles, helicopters, and soft-sided (rubber) watercraft.
Also in the works are a number of specialized rounds, ranging from solid core AP ammunition to non-lethal/ crowd control munitions utilizing inert rubber balls, and RC agents.
Lastly, Barrett believes that the BORS system will be completely compatible with the 200mm air-bursting grenade featured on the OICW and that similar ammunition could be developed for use in the XM-109, as well as adapting the BORS to the OICW, to provide ranging and environmental information to the 20mm grenade launcher.

The Barrett Firearms Company was founded by Ronnie Barrett for the single purpose of building semi-automatic rifles chambered for the hugely powerful.50 BMG ammunition, originally developed for and used in Browning M2 machine guns.
Barrett began his work in early 1980s and the first working rifles were available in 1982, hence the designation M82.
As a side note, the Barrett M82A1 rifle was used in 2002 as a platform for the experimental OSW (Objective Sniper Weapon) prototype.

Oh... My... God... (the new Barrett Sniper "rifle" prototype)
Barrett, the evangelists of the modern.50 caliber sniper rifle, have built a 25mm sniper rifle (although shoulder cannon may be a more precise term), the XM109.
In comparison, the Barrett M107.50 caliber sniper rifle in general use today has a 29 inch barrel, overall length of 57 inches, and weighs in at a mere 32 pounds, with a magazine capacity of 10 rounds.
Barrett will either sell a complete rifle or supply upgrade kits to convert the M107.50 sniper rifle over to the 25mm configuration, replacing the bolt, upper receiver, and magazine.

M82 also can be used to defeat human targets from standoff range or when targets are behind cover, but the anti-personnel work is not a major application for Barrett M82 (or any other.50 BMG rifle, for that matter).
Further development led to the M82A2 bullpup rifle in 1987, which was a reduced-recoil design to be fired from the shoulder.
The M82 also is widely used for civilian.50 caliber long range shooting competitions, being fired accurately out to 1000 yards (900 meters) and even further.

 Sniper - FirearmWiki
A new Sniper rifle undergoing testing is the Barrett XM109 rifle, firing a high-explosive 25 mm round.
Sniping has also been used by terrorists, for example in the Northern Ireland troubles, where in the early seventies a number of soldiers were shot by concealed riflemen, some at considerable range.
In Northern Ireland, contrary to the uses listed above, a sniper was quite often a form of bait called a "come-on", whereby the sniper's position would be made obvious to a British patrol so as to draw them into an ambush in their attempt to close on the sniper.
