Field, Barron (1786 - 1846) Biographical Entry - Australian Dictionary of Biography Online   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
FIELD, BARRON (1786-1846), judge, was born on 23 October 1786, second son of Henry Field, surgeon and apothecary, a direct descendant of Oliver Cromwell, and Esther, née Barron.
Field shared the animus of the 'Parramatta Party' against Dr Douglass, and cordially endorsed what Francis Forbes later described as the 'extra-judicial and unwarrantable proceedings unsanctioned by any law and unsupported by any intelligible good feeling', of Samuel Marsden and four other justices of the peace in the case of Ann Rumsby.
Field sailed for England in the Competitor in February 1824 without waiting for the arrival of his successor or for the reconstitution of the Supreme Court, and so, in effect, deserted his post; but Brisbane was not sorry to see him go.

Barron Field Biography | Dictionary of Literary Biography
Barron Field's reputation as "the first Austral harmonist" rests tenuously upon a single volume, which in its first edition included only two pieces of moderate length, though insubstantial quality.
The stated aims of the volume, grounded as they are in the need for Field to inaugurate what he saw as metropolitan literary discourse in the colony, are only occasionally glimpsed.
Although twentieth-century criticisms of First Fruits of Australian Poetry (1819) have focused on the formal banality of the volume, Field's verse rehearses and sketches some of the conflicts in imagining Australia that were to dominate white writing in the nineteenth century and have their echoes in the twentieth.
