Topic: Barrowdowns

  Argeleb II - Tolkien Gateway
The Hobbits and other peoples living in Arnor all suffered greatly, but the plague lessened as it went north, and the north of Arthedain was scarcely affected.
Still it saw the end of Cardolan, and the last prince of Cardolan was buried in the Barrowdowns in the same mound Frodo Baggins was later caught in.
Evil spirits sent by Angmar passed through Rhudaur to Cardolan, and began to dwell in the Barrowdowns.

 BREE The Barrowdowns
Then to the empty hills came a dreadful shadow and old bones stirred.
Even in the Shire Hobbits shuddered to hear rumours of the Barrow-wights of the Barrowdowns.
Closer to the Old Forest the Hobbits say that staying far from a barrow is preferable, but if one has the misfortune to come upon a barrow it is best to pass by on the west-side quickly and keep to the green grass.

Araval - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
He won a major victory against Angmar, and attempted a recolonisation of Cardolan.
These plans were foiled by the threat of the Barrow-wights of the Barrowdowns, who frightened away or killed the settlers.
Thus, in the end, Araval achieved almost nothing in this endeavour.

The Barrowdowns were used as burial places by the Men of the First Age, and in the 3rd Age by the people of Cardolan.
The Barrowdowns theme page says that "it is believed" that the barrow in which the hobbits were imprisoned was the burial place of the last prince of Cardolan.

I went there because it was a great LotR site and they had all sorts of cool stuff.
Unfortunately, the Barrowdowns didn't allow the form of fanfic Adrienne and I were writing.

I have just finished reading the chapters over Barrowdowns and Tom Bombadill (for the second time) and I am still kind of confused.
I'm not sure, but I think the Barrow-wights are ghosts(?) of the people of Arnor.
Hence, the bodies in the tombs at the Barrowdowns (which were originally part of Cardolan, one of the three splintered kingdoms of Arnor) were basically intact, if not necessarily all that pretty looking.
