For the rest of the year the ballroom was let to Billy Blue and the Bluebirds, but the queues for the regular dances brought home to Maggie McIver that she had a money-making opportunity she was failing to exploit and she poached the Bluebirds' drummer, Billy McGregor, to form a new resident band.
The new ballroom was built to comply with new regulations and The Barrowland Ballroom, as proclaimed by the spectacular neon sign which remains a Glasgow icon nearly 40 years later, on Christmas Eve 1960.

Originally established in 1934, the Barrowland Ballroom is named after the Glasgow Barrowland Market, known as ‘The Barras’ in the vernacular, where the dance hall and concert venue is situated in the mercantile district, just to the east of Glasgow City Centre.
The former building that housed the ballroom was later ravaged by fire in 1958, resulting to a complete rebuild of the complex.
The swinging 1960s marked the turning point for the Barrowlands as a result of the decline in ballroom dancing and the remarkable resurgence of rock and pop music that swept Britain, Europe and America astronomically.

With the opening chords of “Michael,” Franz Ferdinand kicked off the evening as the crowd on the ballroom floor surged towards the stage, heaving half full cups of beer into the air, while others fought to stick up camera phones to grab a quick snapshot.
And the crowd didn’t let up for a moment, jumping up and down and singing along to every note, putting huge smiles across the four band members’ faces, as they proceeded through almost all the songs from their self titled album.
