Altschul's drumming with that band was stylistically all-encompassing -- in his own words, "from ragtime to no time" -- thanks to his background in traditional jazz styles, which gave him a solid grounding on which to build his free playing.
Altschul was largely self-taught until 1960, when he began study with Charlie Persip.
Altschul was a member of the Jazz Composer's Guild and the Jazz Composer's Orchestra Association from 1964-68.

Barry Altschul - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Barry Altschul is a magnificent drummer who gained fame in the late 60's with pianist Paul Bley and others playing in the "outside" style of jazz that had been evolving steadily since Cecil Taylor, Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, and others broke ground.
Barry has beautiful traditional chops and when he recorded with Chick Corea during the Circle era, Barry had a high-pitched Gretsch kit with add-on drums and percussion instruments, which he integrated seamlessly in a whirlwind of sound.
Barry also made a few excellent solo albums and probably did more gigging on the other side of the Atlantic during the "dry years" in the USA.

Drummer Barry Altschul [+] leads a particularly interesting quartet on this date (reissued on CD) that also includes trumpeter Enrico Rava [+], John Surman [+] on baritone and soprano and bassist Mark Helias [+].
The music (three Altschul originals, a song apiece from Helias and Ray Anderson [+], plus Fats Waller's "Jitterbug Waltz") finds the pianoless group sounding halfway between the Gerry Mulligan/Chet Baker Quartet and the late-'50s Ornette Coleman/Don Cherry group.
Among the highlights are Anderson's "Tap-A-Jack," Altschul's "Da Baron's Blues" and Helias' humorous "Le Tango." The advanced and passionate solos ( Rava sounds much more high-powered than normal) and the close communication between the four highly individual improvisers make this a notable and highly recommended release.

Tchicai (dressed more for the links than for a performance) was featured in a quartet with fellow individualists Barry Altschul (supposedly their first encounter since the early '80's), and Paul Smoker.
Propelled forward by Altschul's frenetic drum work, Tchicai seemed to be struggling with music that was coming out almost too fast-an engaging instance of a musician seemingly controlled by the music rather than controlling it.
Barry Altschul seems to only have two ways of playing: intense and more intense.

Formed in 1970 by Holland, pianist Chick Corea, altoist Anthony Braxton and drummer Barry Altschul, Circle eschewed the trend toward fusion/funk and entered into the area of abstraction.
Both Corea and Holland were fresh from their tenure with Miles Davis ' band with which they had toured internationally and recorded such classics as In a Silent Way, Filles de Kilimanjaro and Bitches Brew.
Rounding out the group is the underrated drummer/percussionist Barry Altschul, who was largely self-taught before studying with Charlie Persip and Sam Ulano in the 60's.

Rivers brings out the flute for some hypnotic interplay with Holland's cello on "For Those Who Care," a piece where Altschul is free to embellish with building gongs, triangles, cymbals, and all kinds of creative percussion.
Sam Rivers' status as a master flutist is clear with one listen to this cut, as he runs the gamut from harmonic interplay to manic melodic flight.
With all this talent on hand, it's still Altschul's show, and he pulls off a riveting solo piece called "Hey Toots!" that is full of creativity and exciting sounds from his trap set, wood blocks, chimes, cowbells, gongs and even a bowed waterphone.

His idea was to assemble a trio with drummer Barry Altschul and violinist Billy Bang: an unusual lineup, to be sure, but one that Fonda intuited would work.
But that record is based almost entirely on written material, while on the trio's current tour the emphasis is going to be more on free playing; or, as Fonda prefers to call it, "spontaneous composition".
Billy's younger than Barry, but they knew some of the same people and they grew up in the same neighbourhood and that whole Bronx community thing is such a part of them.
