Barry Callaghan was the eighth reader showcased in the 2003-2004 Canadian Writers in Person series.
The more powerful of the videos was an eight-minute segment of a CBC broadcast made by Callaghan from (literally) the midst of some of the heaviest fighting that took place in Amman, Jordan, during the 1970 Black September uprising against King Hussein, led by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.
The powerful presentation by Callaghan and Richardson provided a convincing, often appalling, survey of military violence, brutal animal violence (in the detailed description of an illegal dogfight in rural Ontario), emotional and physical violence combined in a domestic setting that ends in murder, and fantasies of violence.

Barry and Linda came to visit us (near Bordeaux) a few years ago and I asked if there was anything special he wanted to do.
He talked of Barry's wide musical life, his support of musicians young and old and of the films that he had made of traditional dancers and musicians, a legacy for future generations.
Barry's remaining projects, the 'Hardcore English' book and CD, the DVDs on Sam Sherry and Manley Morris and more, will be picked up by his friends and brought to a conclusion to become a fitting tribute to a good man, taken too soon.

Callaghan's own "The Cohen In Cowan" is one of the book's real gems, although his "A Kiss Is Still A Kiss," taken from his new novel of the same title, made me glad I didn't get the whole book to review.
One is left with the impression that world-class violence, sexual heterogeneity, existential despair and literary output notwithstanding, Toronto's dark side might actually be its entrenched conservatism.

The interest comes a day after the Anglo-Dutch publisher surprised the market by saying it wanted to sell its underperforming education division, Harcourt Education, to focus on its faster-growing science, legal and business publishing businesses.
