Barry County is a county located in the state of Michigan.
Barry County was formed by an act of the legislature of the Michigan Territory on April 29, 1829.
In the county the population is spread out with 27.20% under the age of 18, 7.50% from 18 to 24, 29.00% from 25 to 44, 24.60% from 45 to 64, and 11.80% who are 65 years of age or older.

Generally speaking, it might be said that the northern and eastern portions of the county were almost solidly behind the Union with the southern and western parts, with a few exceptions, sympathetic to the Confederate cause.
Barry county Representative W.S. McConnell, a 38-year-old druggist and hotel keeper who lived across the street from the Court House where the rump sessions were held, refused to vote in the body, although he believed in secession.
County records, many of which may be seen and examined today, were hidden in a cave southeast of Cassville and kept there until the close of the war.

County officials moved to other quarters, and the building was razed in 1910.

The newly formed county contained the present counties of Barry, Lawrence, Dade, McDonald, Newton, Jasper, Barton and a part of Cedar Co. The first county seat was at Mount Pleasant, located on Clear Creek just west of the present day Pierce City.
By 1840 Barry Co had been pared down to what is the present day Barry Co and the southern half of Lawrence Co. Also in 1840 the county seat was moved to McDonald (now McDowell) where it was housed in the residence of Samuel G Phariss, until 1845.
By 1845 Lawrence Co was formed and the county seat was no longer in the geographic center of Barry Co, so the new seat was formed in what is now Cassville and housed in the William Kerr residence.

Today, the DEQ announced that on January 12, 2004, a jury found a Barry County man guilty of violating Michigan’s wetland and floodplain laws.
Michael B. Smith of Orangeville Township, Barry County, was sentenced to six months probation, ordered to pay $200 in fines, and required to fully restore the wetlands and floodplain damaged as a result of his illegal activities.
The case was a collaborative effort between the DEQ’s Geological and Land Management Division, Office of Criminal Investigations, and the Barry County Prosecuting Attorney.
