Barry Gray considers his favorite composers to be Bach, Mozart and Beethoven, the "three greats" he terms them, as well as the French impressionists, Debussy and Ravel.
Barry attended the Space: 1999 Alliance Conventions in Atlanta, Georgia and Columbus Ohio, and was a main guest at the Fanderson 1982 convention in London, at which he played many of his famous themes.

He was born in to a musical family and greatly encouraged to pursue a musical career from a very early age.
This was followed by Torchy The Battery Boy and then the famed Four Feather Falls, a puppet Western.

The selections here run the gamut, have doses of all the main themes, a few slices of action, plenty of Mysteron creeping around and a good dollop of lounge music, the latter being so cheesy that one wonders if it's part of the joke.
Fans of the series shouldn't hesitate as this is not only a fine souvenir of Gray's music, but of the series, with very detailed notes on both music and show.

For the orchestral and hip-groovy score, Barry Gray made extensive use of the Ondes Martinot (an early electronic musical instrument with a keyboard and slide invented in 1928 by Maurice Martenot, and originally very similar in sound to the Theremin) and Hammond Organ.
Gray scored specific musical cues for scenes and also generic working music that could be cut to scenes as and when needed.
The music on this LP is taken from a variety of episodes and was produced from Gray's original multi-track master tapes.

The 16 page booklet details the restoration of these tracks from their original source and from the looks of things, there is likely to be more to come covering the other series.
As much of the material is restored from tapes that the late composer Barry Gray had locked away in a garage, seeing the restoration and transfer to modern recording methods and the quality of the music is one of the reasons Gray's work has so much regard amongst his fans.

Gerry Anderson's various tv series are rightly considered classics by several generations who grew up with them; Thunderbirds is probably the most classic of all.
As was common at the time, each new show didn't necessarily have a new score, but Gray recycled many piece from one show to the next, sometimes adding something new.
Sound quality is excellent (even though most of the tracks are mono) and the liner notes are informative and a good read.
