Paperback Reader : Review of Empire
I like Kitson's design for Golgoth -- colorful, without losing the necessary sense of menace -- but the rest of the character designs are sort of blah.
He does a great job of differentiating characters through body size and facial shape, but their costumes and uniforms are uninspired, skintight villain costumes -- the sort of stuff you'd expect to see in a mid-90's Image comic.
Fans of Waid and Kitson's superhero work will probably enjoy this (even though they might feel like they need a shower after reading it), and the ending is satisfying enough while still leaving the door open for sequels down the line.

COMICON.com: BARRY KITSON DRAWING A LEGION OF SUPERHEROES
Kitson said that it had a lot to do with his fond memories of the series.
Kitson added, "The great thing - the best thing for us about this - is that we've been allowed to start from scratch, we don't want to repeat anything that has been done before, so, we don't have to think about how we can redo this, because we're not going to be redoing anything.
Barry Kitson can do no wrong for the most part and I think he is really suited for this book.

 Pop Thought -- Derek Handley
Mark Waid and Barry Kitson are crafting an intriguing tale, and the art is beautiful.
The team and the universe have little in common with the Legions we saw pre- or post-Zero Hour: while the names and faces are all familiar and the powers are the same or similar, the rationale behind the teams' existence and the tone of the book may not sit well with long-term fans.
Barry Kitson is no stranger to darker titles, having been instrumental in the creation of "L.E.G.I.O.N.", a DC science-fiction and super-hero title of the nineties which had a manipulative central character who would stop at nothing to get his way, and which had surprises aplenty during its first year.

Kitson's designs for this series -- not just for the characters, but for the worlds in which they travel and the beings they encounter -- are stunning and convincing.
Kitson embraces a more modern take on science-fiction here by approaching the idea of alien life as truly alien in appearance.
We see it here in the opening scene, as a tentacled creature is center stage in a murder plot, and we see it in Naltorian architecture, which boasts an oddly organic look.
