  Strat's Place - Daniel Rogov - Sauternes and Barsac - 1999 - A Splendid Vintage
Chateau Broustet, Barsac, 1999: Medium bodied and with a color that varies as one hold it to the light from light golden to orange, this richly sweet wine almost shows off with its luxurious coconut, cinnamon and sweet citrus aromas and flavors.
Chateau Nairac, Barsac, 1999: So full bodied and sweet is this burnished golden wine that at first sip one might be tempted to think of this wine as "heavy", but soon revealing such good balance and structure that the wine opens to reveal melon, apricot and honeyed flavors and aromas.
Chateau Doisy-Daene, Barsac, 1999: I'm not quite certain whether it is a compliment or an insult to refer to a Barsac wine as "easy to drink" but that term fits this wine nicely.

In Barsac, wine growers have the choice to market their wine under the Barsac AOC or Sauternes AOC.
It means that all Barsac wines could also be Sauternes wines while Sauternes wines cannot wear Barsac on their label.

BARSAC - Wine International   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
The wines of those early days would have borne little, if any, resemblance to the ones for which Barsac and Sauternes are famous today; they would almost certainly generally have been dry and red, but probably richer in flavour than in most of the Graves vineyards to the north.
By the 18th century, however, there is little doubt that winegrowers in Barsac were leaving grapes to become very ripe before they were picked and producing wine that was white and quite sweet, though not lusciously so.
Barsac’s wine was sold in Britain before ‘Vin de Sauterne’, but the fame of Yquem and its immediate neighbours helped to establish the latter commune’s name.

Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
All of the red wines that made it on the list came from the Médoc region except for the Château Haut-Brion from Graves.
The white wines, then of much less importance than red wine, were limited to the sweet varieties of Sauternes and Barsac and were ranked only from first great growth to second growth.
Interestingly, since it is a classification of Châteaux, the actual vineyards owned by some wineries have expanded and shrunk without any reclassification.

Sweetness of wine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In recent decades, an increase in the population who only occasionally drink wine has led to an increase in the sweetness of many cheap wines, and as a result medium and sweet wines have a perception among many drinkers of being of lower quality than dry wines.
However, many of the world's great wines, such as those from Sauternes, Barsac or Tokaj, have a high level of residual sugar which is carefully balanced with additional acidity to produce a harmonious result.
