Barsuk Records (pronounced "Bar-SOOK") is an independent record label based in Seattle, Washington, started and still managed by the members of the band This Busy Monster, Christopher Possanza and Josh Rosenfeld in 1994 to release their band's material.
Its logo is a drawing of a dog holding a record in its mouth.
However, the label is not named after a badger, as is noted in the Barsuk Records FAQ[1], but after Christopher Possanza's dog, a fl labrador.

Josh Rosenfeld and everyone at Barsuk have done a fantastic job in nurturing the band and building their huge indie fanbase over the past six years.
Barsuk Records co-founder Josh Rosenfeld noted: "Working with Death Cab For Cutie has been a great experience for all of us at Barsuk.
Not only were we wary of leaving the comfortable situation we've had at Barsuk, but since Josh and the rest of Barsuk have been close friends of ours and have matched us hour-for-hour working for the success of the band, we'd never have made a move without their blessing.

 Movement Magazine .com : 12.03 : Music : Barsuk Records : Christopher Possanza :
Barsuk is a Russian word meaning "badger", and the dog was so named either because he resembled a badger as a puppy, or because he liked to dig like a badger when he was a puppy, or just because we liked the word.
Our artists have a lot of control over how their music is presented to the world, more so than on most labels, and they generally own their masters and have input concerning how we market their records.
That being said, it's definitely important for us to remain viable as a business, so the Barsuk staff are much more in control of the business side (as opposed to the creation side) of the label than are the individual bands.

Born in 1999, Asthmatic Kitty Records was originally conceived as a platform for musical projects by a community of artists from Holland, Michigan, a small city on the shore of Lake Michigan.
Barsuk Records was started in the late '90s by friends and bandmates Josh Rosenfeld and Christopher Possanza, as a way to put out music by their own band (This Busy Monster) and their friends' bands (Death Cab for Cutie, Little Champions, Abigail Grush, et al).
Barsuk Records continues to expand its roster into 2006 (with upcoming releases from Rocky Votolato, Mates of State, Starlight Mints and Viva Voce), and promises to be a beacon of quality music for years to come.
