His early services were as a soldier on the Scottish borders, but he soon turned his thoughts to the sea, and was appointed captain of a fleet of three ships which set out in 1553 with the object of discovering a north-eastern passage to Cathay and India.
Another famous member of this family was Sir Nesbit Josiah Willoughby (1777-1849), who entered the British navy in 1790 and was present at the battle of Copenhagen.
In 1800, however, he was dismissed from the service by the sentence of a court-martial for his insolent conduct towards a superior officer, a previous offence of this kind having been punished less severely.

In 1980 Bart starred in Wrong Side of the Road, the first Aboriginal artist to both appear in and write lyrics for a doco-drama.
Bart went on to become the first Aboriginal musician to score a feature film, the first to sign a record deal and leader of the first overseas touring Aboriginal rock band.

Bart Willoughby, drummer, singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist has been a trailblazer for Australian Aboriginal rock music for over two decades.
For those that have ears to hear and eyes to see, many of his songs are searing indictments of the damage wrought to Aboriginal life and lands by colonization, but also finely-woven stories which celebrate his people's survival, struggles and strength.
Bart Willoughby's 1997 solo CD Pathways also contained some pretty powerful tunes like "Ethnic Cleansing", "Message For Young and Old" and the title track.

Sir Simonds D'Ewes, Bart., English antiquarian, eldest son of Paul D'Ewes of Milden, Suffolk, and of Cecilia, daughter and heir of Richard Simonds, of Coaxdon or Coxden, Dorsetshire, was born on the 18th of December 1602, and educated at the grammar school of Bury St. Edmunds, and at St. John's College, Cambridge.
He had been admitted to the Middle Temple in 1611, and was called to the bar in 1623, when he immediately began his collections of material and his studies in history and antiquities.
He had married secondly Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Henry Willoughby, Bart., of Risley in Derbyshire, by whom he had a son, who succeeded to his estates and title, the latter becoming extinct on the failure of male issue in 1731.

While at uni one of Rob's lecturers, Kevin Stanton, introduced him to Bart Willoughby and he played on Bart's single "Black Emotion".
