BART serves major destinations including downtown San Francisco, Oakland and Berkeley (which is adjacent the UC campus); the San Francisco and Oakland airports (the latter via a shuttle); and the Oakland Coliseum and Arena.
BART had been infamous for its 1970s design and technology, from monolithic IBM machines that wouldn't accept crisp bills and generated flimsy tickets that, when wet, jammed faregates (the new machines spit out sturdier smart cards) to stations that — well, let's just say that polyester was popular at the time.
BART is now planning a DMU extension of the Pittsburg/Bay Point line to Byron, in the far east end of Contra Costa County; it also proposed a line from Dublin/Pleasanton over the Altamont to Tracy, although local officials decided to divert limited funds to roads and hold out for a "full" BART extension instead.

BART officials discussed tBART and the option of running buses down I- 580 express lanes and the I-580 Corridor Study Committee overseeing an upcoming state-funded study of a Livermore BART extension and other alternatives.
In the meantime, everyone would be served by trying to protect the I-580 median for BART." BART board member Pete Snyder, who chairs the corridor study committee, said everyone needs to decide up-front whether diesel train service would be an interim or permanent alternative to BART, particularly in light of the cost.

New transit plan could link Pleasanton-San Joaquin Valley (December 20, 2002)
The plan, described as "strictly conceptual," was presented by Val Joseph Menotti, BART's Alameda County planning manager, and Thomas G. Matoff, director of transportation planning for LTK Engineering Services, which developed the plan.
Building on a policy recommendation to eventually extend BART service to Greenville Road in the I-580 median, the two planners told the Vision 2010 transportation committee that a combination of light rail and alternative diesel-powered trains could offer interim mass transit options.
Since it could be 10-20 years or more before BART extends its rail line to Greenville Road, Matoff suggested using a combination of light rail, express buses and multiple diesel units to extend mass transit service to Tracy and Stanislaus County destinations.
