 Adolphe Thiers
In January 1872 he formally tendered his resignation; and though it was refused, almost all parties disliked him, while his chief supportersmen like Remusat, Barthelemy Saint-Hilaire and Jules Simon were men rather of the past than of the present.
Both his talents and his temper made him utterly indisposed to maintain the attitude supposed to be incumbent on a republican president; and his tongue was never a carefully governed one.

EXTERIOR POLICY - Online Information article about EXTERIOR POLICY
Jules Ferry took his stand on the position that his policy was one not of colonial conquest, but of colonial conservation, that without Tunis, Algeria was insecure, that without Tongking and Annam, there was danger of losing Cochin-China, where the French had been in possession since 1861.
Jules Ferry had died on the 17th of March 1893, only three weeks after his triumphant rehabilitation in the political world by his election to the presidency of the Senate, the second post in the state.
Jules Ferry was not a friend of Gambetta, in spite of later republican legends.
