A native of Haarlem, Van der Helst was the most fashionable Dutch portrait painter of his time, specializing in guild and militia group portraits.
The unknown sitter for this portrait by Van Ravesteyn (pronunciation) is aristocratic and very wealthy, as indicated by the amount of lace edge on her ruff and the miniature portrait pinned to her dress.
Van Ravesteyn belonged to a large family of artists from The Hague especially favored by the court of the Stadhouder (literally "Citykeeper," the ruler in place of the king).

The Hoogsteder Journal: Portrait Painters in Rembrandt's World
Van der Helst was a master in depicting the opulent garments of his models and the luxurious surroundings in which they chose to be portrayed.
And Van Honthorst had followers outside The Hague too: in Amsterdam, Bartholomeus van der Helst was particularly influenced in both pallette and composition.
Van Dijck was at his best when painting rapidly, with a loose brush; Honthorst's touch was that of a quicker Van Miereveldt.

Regents of the Walloon Orphanage by HELST, Bartholomeus van der
A marked change in the Dutch portraitist's conception of his task becomes apparent in the work of Bartholomeus van der Helst.
Adriaen Hanneman (1610-71) returned to The Hague with Van Dyckian motifs about 1637, after more than a ten-year stay in England, and the portraits he and his pupils made for courtly patrons helped to set the new fashion.
Van der Helst's marriage in Amsterdam in 1636 suggests he had settled there by then.

Biography of Bartholomeus van der Helst
Van der Helst’s mature portraiture was vivid and flattered his sitters, and was possibly more appealing than the pensive and sombre portraits by Rembrandt.
Following the death of his wife Saskia in 1642 and the critical reception of ‘The Night Watch’, Rembrandt moved to religious subjects and this gave van der Helst the benefit of an unchallenged position as a portraitist of the Republic’s ruling class.
The latter work was considered a masterpiece and established van der Helst’s lasting fame.

Patrons turned to Van der Helst, who firmly established his reputation in 1643, when his first large group portrait, Captain Bicker's Company, received rave reviews for its swagger, bright colors, virtuoso display of finery, and clearly delineated individuals.

Portrait of a Young Man in Military Costume (Getty Museum)
With the determined, confident air of an officer accustomed to giving orders, this young man was typical of the wealthy admirals, military heroes, and members of the regent class who patronized Bartholomeus van der Helst, the most popular portrait painter among Amsterdam's leading citizens.
They sought him out for his elegant, almost glamorous manner, inspired by the art of Anthony van Dyck, and for his scrupulous attention to their expensive costume.
In characteristic fashion, van der Helst devoted extensive attention to the raised ornament of this somber soldier's costume, brilliantly depicting the gold and silver brocade and scattering reflection throughout the whole picture.

In the 1640s he took over from Rembrandt as the most popular portraitist in the city, his detailed, tasteful, and slightly flattering likenesses appealing more to the fashionable burghers than the master's work, which was becoming more individual and introspective.
Van der Helst was highly influential during his lifetime.
