 Homily - 27 September 1997
The face of Bologna is also that of its saints, who drew from the truth and charity of the Gospel inspiration for their words and actions among the men and women of this city, whose original features they fashioned and which can still be seen today.
Although Bartholomew Mary Dal Monte’s earthly activity was marked by a typically intra-ecclesial dedication such as the preaching of missions to the people and the formation of priests, it had a powerful influence on the civil fabric of the nation, helping effectively to promote the elements of justice, concord and peace.
Dear brothers and sisters, the beatification of Bartholomew Mary Dal Monte is providentially a part of the celebrations of the Eucharistic Congress because it fully emphasizes the connection between a conscious, lived Eucharistic spirituality and the personal and ecclesial commitment to evangelization.

 Art of Duccio
In some cases (the Madonna in Bologna and the Madonna in Castelfiorentino) the painters seem to have achieved a real joint effort: the earlier style of the conception of these paintings suggests that the plan was Cimabue's, while the luminous treatment of colour implies that Duccio executed the work.
The Gualino Madonna and the Bologna altarpiece anticipate the skill Duccio was to show in modifying the traits of his teacher, softening the over-harsh contrasts of line and colour.

May/June 2000 - Pain and the Medieval Physician
In lecturing on De interioribus, Bartholomew of Varignana melded patient experiences with theoretical speculation to develop a classification of the different kinds of pain (Siraisi, 1981).
Bartholomew of Varignana’s classification of seven types of pain described by patients — congelativo, pulsativo, aggrativo, extensivo, frangitivo, pungitivo, and compressivo (Galen, 1490; Da Varignana, n.d.[a]) — was designed to improve the diagnosis of internal diseases.
