Bartica developed from an Anglican missionary settlement, established in 1842.
Just to the north of the Bartica lie the remaisn of the Dutch fort Kyk-over-al, former government seat for the County of Essequibo.

Plans are well on stream for the staging of the 2004 Bartica Easter Regatta and Miss Bartica Beauty Pageant, billed for April 10 to 12.
On Easter Monday, April 12, there will be a Bartica Reunion Soak Fete at the Regatta Pavilion and persons wishing to attend this activity are being warned that they will be soaked with water from the Mazaruni River.

The plan is to proceed from the airport to Parika, and from Parika by speed launch to Bartica.
You can go by road to Parika and get on to Bartica any time of day using the many speed launches that are now available.

You need two charts to go up to Bartica as unlike all the other rivers, which have a u shaped bottom and are deep, this one is wide, has sand banks, rocks and islands to avoid but it is quite safe to navigate.
In Bartica a good contact is Halbert Knight pharmacist and President of the local Chamber of Commerce.
I spent time in Bartica, for example, and found racism to be non existent.

Growing up in Bartica has special charms for me. The most common way to travel to and from Parika on our way to Georgetown was on the older, two-decked steamers with names of native fishes and birds splashed in large, emboldened letters stuck to their exteriors – Lukanani, Powis, Tarpon, et cetera.
To relive this cultural odyssey today, the preferred mode of traveling the sprawling openness of the breathtakingly beautiful Essequibo is either by private jet boats or speed boats which ply the route daily.
We left on time as planned and after another five miles south of Bartica, we arrived at our destination, and were greeted by a young woman/waitress who offered us tall glasses of cold, refreshing lemonade.

A small commercial centre, Bartica is situated at the head of navigation by small oceangoing ships, on the Essequibo River 50 mi (80 km) inland from the Atlantic Ocean, and it is linked by air with Georgetown, the national capital.
Its headstreams arise in the Pakaraima Mountains of western Guyana and flow generally northward.
Descending from the Guiana Highlands, the river turns southeastward as far as Issano and then curves northeastward to Bartica, where it is joined by the Cuyuni River, just upstream from its confluence with the Essequibo.
